Hawthorne is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,065 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Fayette Township, New Jersey Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was settled in 1795 by Loyalists from New York who had fled to this area during the American Revolution. The first house built in Hawthorne was the home of Nicholas Biddle and his wife Rebecca Chambers. In 1807, John Fenton purchased land in Hawthorne from Nicholas Biddle and built a gristmill on what is now Spring Street. In 1813, Daniel Derocher enrolled as a student at Princeton University and bought property adjoining Fenton's mill for $2 per acre (the equivalent of $ today). derocher soon became one of Haworthyn's leading citizens and served as its mayor twice. In 1825, George Washington Grant donated land to the town for a public school which would eventually become known as Grant High School. In 1840, Presbyterian minister Drury erected what is nowDerocher Chapel on lands donated by him and others near Main Street and Spring Street. That same year new streets were hastily laid out through central Hawthorne when it seemed that development would not occur until after the war ended; today these streets remain largely unchanged except for name changes (e.g., First Avenue → Maple Avenue). During World War II, Hawthorne played an important role in supporting Allied forces with its large stores and production capabilities located within its boundaries including: primary military supplies such as ammunition and gasoline; war material such as vehicles and tanks; food production such as canned goods; shipbuilding materials including anchors and moorings; local construction materials such as bricks

Hawthorne was founded in 1798 by John Hawthorne and his brother Nicholas Hawthorne. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1851, the town became a borough; it was abolished as such in 1960 and merged into Princeton. The township of Hawthorne was created on March 4, 1800 from parts of Rahway Township and Passaic Township. On February 24, 1824 its name was changed to Hawksbury Borough due to resistance from residents of Rahway who wanted their own borough with their own police force. The first minister for the new borough was Rev George Herrick with Dr John Green serving as lay reader from 1825-1827 and 1830-1831 . In 1902 the Borough along with Princeton were incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature (Citizen's Charter No. 377). However this incorporation never took place because City Hall burned down on July 14, 1903 during an annual fire sale organized by Mayor James Fenton to raise money for street repairs and other needs within the city limits which included not only Hawthorne but also Princeton and East Brunswick
