Hawthorne is named for John Haworth, 1st Baron Haworth (1624-1692), an Anglo-Irish nobleman and Member of Parliament from Dublin. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hawthorne were Dutch traders in 1609. They called it "Weehawken" or "Wickenham". In 1690, a group of Englishmen led by Captain John Smith discovered land here and named it after them: "Hawthorne", meaning "place where two streams met." This was also the name given to various parts of Morris County including this borough which became its capital in 1701 when Philadelphia was founded as an independent city. In 1834, when Morristown was incorporated as a township, Hawthorne became part of that township; however, it reverted to its original borough status afterMorristown's incorporation into Burlington Township on February 14, 1949. On November 5, 1965 – one year before Trenton’s incorporation into Mercer County – Hawthorne elected Mayor James J.
