Hawthorne, New Jersey is a small town located in Essex County, New Jersey. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Hawthorne Woods which are located east of the town. Hawthorne is home to a large number of agricultural businesses and also has a few stores and restaurants. Hawthorne first came into contact with people from other parts of America during the Revolutionary War when British soldiers stopped by on their way through America. The town was originally called "Haverhill" and later changed to "Hawthorne." The community was founded in 1814 by Ezra Heywood Hawthorne and his brother Elijah Heywood Hawthorne. John Swayne, who owned land in the area, donated $2,000 to help start the community. The first store in Hawthorne opened its doors in 1835. It was run by Jno Covington until he sold it to Nicholas Rivers in 1841. A school was built near what is now Market Street in 1845 and it served as both an elementary school and high school until 1957 when it became part of Essex County High School District No.. 2 . In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Hawthorn while on vacation at White Sands National Monument and took pictures for his book "The American West". While looking out of his window as he walked down Main Street he saw an old man walking across a field towards him with a basketful of eggs on his head which caught his attention so he decided to take some pictures himself! president roosevelt's visit marked the beginning of commercial development in Hawthorn which continued until 1958 when it became part-time status with then-Newark Township Schools District No.. 1 . A post office called "Haverhill"opened on December 12, 1850, under postal administration from Newark; however its operation ceased on January 3rd 1861 due to multiple collisions between mail coaches travelling through Haworthenese fields (and other areas) resulting from new railroad construction nearby that year

Hawthorne is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Hawthorne were Dutch settlers who founded a trading post there in 1675. English colonists arrived in 1714 and built a small house on the site of present-day Hawthorne Elementary School. In 1722, British troops burned down the Dutch post, which led to its abandonment and the settlement of Hawthorne by English colonists. The original home of John Haworth, one of the early settlers, still stands today as an apartment building near junction street and Great Northern Road. In 1831, when Middlesex County was created from parts of Essex and Mercer counties, Hawthorne became part of its new district. At that time it had a population of just over 100 people; by 1860 it had doubled to 221 people. However, during World War II Hawthorne lost most of its residents to military service or evacuation due to bombings throughout the county; only 31 residents remained by 1940. Hawthorne's economy has been based mainly on agriculture since before 1850 when land around present-day Hawthorne was used for growing crops such as corn and beans; however manufacturing began arriving in earnest after World War II with nearby Camden becoming an important center for plastics manufacturing and other industries thereafter. Today much of Hawthorn's commercial activity takes place within walking distance of its downtown core where stores including Macy's Department Store (founded 1903) and JCPenney (owned 1959 until 2013) are located among others along Market Street between Broad Street and Arch Streets.; also close by are several smaller businesses such as Albertsons (founded 1901), Dunkin' Donuts (established 1968), Hannaford Supermarkets (1901), Pizza Hut (born 1957), Sam’s Club/Barnes & Noble/(PepsiCo.), Trader Joe’s Grocery Stores (/ doubtful 1960s - open 1990s). Hawthorne is governed under Borough form with a Mayor/Council comprising 11 members elected at-large on an absolute majority basis followed by 3 Councilmen/Wives who serve staggered 4 year terms beginning January 1st following November election results; with no term limits purported except for Councilwoman Darlene Ladd who serves indefinitely having served since November 2009 through December 2019 inclusive
