Hawthorne was laid out by Nicholas Hawthorne in 1795 and named for him. The community was incorporated as a borough on November 3, 1892, from portions of Elizabeth Township and Englewood Township. On May 11, 1909 it became a city under the name of Hawthorne Heights after it amalgamated with other municipalities within Mercer County to form the Newark metropolitan area. The current mayor is Republican Donald Trump who has served since January 2017. The primary industry in Hawthorne is manufacturing although there are some businesses that provide services such as health care and education. There are also several churches in the community including two Baptist churches and one Methodist church which have been around for many years.

In 1885, Hawthorne had a population of just over 100 people; by 1910 it had only 60 residents remaining. By 1920 it had all but disappeared from the map completely. However, some remains of Hawthorne are still visible today: two churches (the First Presbyterian Church and the Methodist church), a schoolhouse (now known as the John Fenton School), and an old post office building located on Main Street.
