Hawthorne is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. The area now known as Hawthorne was first settled by English colonists in 1675. The name "Hawthorne" derives from a nearby wood called Holland Gap and may come from one of the early settlers' children's names, Harry or Henery. In 1701, John Jay sold land to William Paterson for £100; Paterson renamed the tract "Hawthorne." In 1821, Nathaniel Hawthorne bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of what is now Morris County from Colonel Abraham Parsons for $10 per acre. He named it "Hawthorne Township". By 1860, he had added an additional 100 acres (40 hectares). In 1876-77, he developed his estate into 4 farms consisting of 1/2 mile (1 kilometer) square parcels with high fences that could be leased for $50 per year to large farmers and their families. These farmsteads are still extant: Haworth House (built in 1889), White Sands Farm (), Eastown Farm (), Westown Farm (). In 1869-70 Ebenezer Hazard donated land east of Hawthorne Road for use as a school district election ground and cemetery; this area became known as Hazardville. In 1896-97 the township trustees voted to name a park after General George Washington because “he has been so conspicuously conspicuous both during our Revolution and since” and also because “the patriots who fought under him have left behind them an example which we may emulation…. [He] has done more than any other patriot in this country to make America great again” . On July 8, 1902 Hawthorne died at age 85 years old while living on his estate near White Sands Farm.. His wife Kitty later married Dr. Augustus Francis Gibbs Jr., son of Augustus Francis Gibbs Sr., headmaster at Hackensack High School where she taught until her death in 1951
