The Hawthorne area was first settled in 1740 by the Dutch. The region became a part of New Jersey in 1764. The area was renamed Hawthorne Township in 1835 and then Hawthorne Borough in 1876.
Hawthorne is a township in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Hawthorne" is derived from Middle English hamlet and means place of hounds (cf. Old French hâtel). In 1678, John Hathorn moved his family to what is now Hawthorne from Salem Township in Middlesex County. He took over the local post office and built a house on this site which still stands today as the town hall. At that time, Hawthorne consisted of only 6 families and had a total population of just 50 people. In 1867, John Fenton purchased land next to the Post Office building for $1,000 and founded Hawthorne Academy which became one of America's first private schools. Today there are over 350 students attending Haverford College in neighboring Camden while also being offered courses at three other high schools- Western Regional High School (WRHS), Easton Senior High School (EAS) and Valley Forge Regional High School (VFHS). In 1901, Hawthorne established its own hospital with Drs. Jens Ludwig & Nemur as its first Doctors-in-Chief; it has been expanding ever since! Today Hawthorne is home to many businesses including: KFC/ Colonel Sanders' restaurants - located on Main Street across fromtown Hall; American Legion Post #5018 - currently home to The Gilded Cage - an all you can eat buffet that offers unique dishes unusual for any type restaurant; PNC Bank - located on First Avenue across from town hall; Wells Fargo - located on Second Avenue across from town hall; Subway sandwich shop known as "The Subway" inside town hall plaza; Dunkin' Donuts - located outside at Goffstown Road & 2nd Ave.; There are also several small stores within walking distance including: Wegmans Food Markets - located nearRoute 9 exit 8 North ; Wild Bill's Sporting Goods store off Route 10 east side between exits 7A&7B north of town limits

Hawthorne is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Hawthorne were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. The town was named for John Haworth, an Englishman who had settled in that area in 1675. In 1781, Hawthorne was incorporated as a borough by order of the General Assembly of New Jersey. The township remained under municipal control until 1912 when it became independent and annexed by Newark. In 1881, Erie Canal construction began and increased traffic along Route 9 prompted the incorporation of Hawthorne as a city on November 3 that year by Mayor Augustus Purdy with the support of Governor Richard Stockton. On December 6th, 1882, Hawthorne's charter was approved by the state Senate and signed into law by Governor John Stevens II. The city expanded rapidly due to its proximity to the new canal and its status as an incorporator; rapid growth caused problems for both Hawthorne and Newark which fought together to keep their status quo until 1902 when they merged into one municipality. The first store opened in what is now downtown Hawthorne on May 15th, 1892; this was followed soon thereafter by two other stores before becoming home to a bank within two years (the First National Bank). By 1918 there were ten businesses operating inside of what is now downtown Hawthorne - more than any other street in town save Broad Street which served as commercial thoroughfare only outside of downtown from then until 1930 when it disappeared entirely due to redevelopment efforts associated with World War II and later automobile production areas east of I-95 near Piscataway Township Comprehensive School District No 1 headquarters building located at 2115 Maple Ave NE cornering Utopia Parkway just south of Interstate 95 exit #4 off Rte 9 northbound during all business hours except March 14 & October 14 closed because owner refused service after being told bomb threats against his store made him change his mind). This activity led to demolition mostall or nearly all structures on Maple Avenue NE between Utopia Parkway and I-95 exclusive use since early 1940s providing much needed open space adjacent to I-95 truck stop/motel lot used today mainly for parking purposes
