Hawthorne is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Raritan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The hamlet of Hawthorne was first settled by English colonists in 1676 as "Huntingdon". The name likely derived from Old English hæfde meaning 'a piece of land between two hills'. In 1724, John Woolridge purchased a tract of land adjoining that of John Tryon on the east side of Center Street and renamed it Hawthorne after his old home near Huntingdon in England. The early residents were farmers who raised horses and cattle and grew corn, beans, wheat, oats and potatoes; but their industry declined during the Revolutionary War era because they were not able to provide munitions or military supplies for the war effort. However, Hawthorne prospered during the post-war period as a manufacturing center for textiles such as clothing and shoe leather. By 1871, when township boundaries were redrawn following an act by then-Governor William Woodbury, Hawthorne had become one of the most populous townships in New Jersey with a population over 1,000 people. In 1881 Edwin Prentice built what became known as Prentice's Mill on White Horse Brook Dam which provided water to many farms in neighboring Unicoi Township; however this mill closed down due to competition from other mills throughout the area beginning around 1920. However Haworthians continue to produce flour until present day along with various items such as cheese and eggs. A new shoppingcenter called plaza opened on Route 3 South across from township hall in fall 2009 which includes several stores including JCPenney (now Macy's) and Sears Roebuck & Co., making it one of only three malls within 15 miles (24 km) of Howard University campus in Newark while also accommodating more than 150 restaurants including Subway sandwich chain Joining forces with Hasbro parent company Mattel Toys Incorporated back in 2006 has given Mall Of America Entertainment District status to Mall Of America Park -home to four performing arts venues including Lincoln Hall Theatre Company (LHTC), Hackensack Performing Arts Center (HPAC), Broadhurst Theatre Company (BHC)and Goldwater Playhouse -the largest theater complex west of Philadelphia/.

Hawthorne is a town in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Hawthorne was made on an island in the Hackensack River by John Hathaway and his family in 1764. They named their new community after Major General William Prescott's home town of Hawksbury, England. That year, the town had a population of only 15 people and was located on Long Island just upstream from present-day Hawthorne Township. In 1802, land was acquired along with other portions of Burlington County for $2 million by George Washington Parke Custis II and his wife Martha Washington Parke Custis (née Randolph). The couple renamed their holdings "Hawthorne" after one of their two daughters who died young at age 8 years old. In 1814, when Princeton University moved to Newark from Morristown because that city lacked space for its students and professors, Hawthorne followed suit and became the university's second campus within five years. By 1830, there were 2200 residents living in 5 blocks surrounding downtown Hawthorne; by 1840 it had grown to 4500 residents within a radius of 10 blocks including all but one block around the original downtown core which still remains today as its central business district; by 1850 it had reached 6500 residents within a radius of 25 blocks including most of downtown as well as all but one block around contemporary northwest corner streets which are now known as Green Street and Broad Street (now part of Ridgewood Avenue)). Hawthorne remained largely agricultural until about 1920 when manufacturing started to take hold due to high demand for products exported to Europe during World War I. Afterward, small businesses grew up throughout the township such as dry goods stores (such as Gorman’s Department Store), machine shops (including Norbert Fuhrman’s foundry), printing shops (such as The Press Company), grocery stores (Fritz & Sons Grocery Store) and lumberyards (Lumberyard Co.). These businesses continue to operate into the present day although some have closed or been replaced by larger ones since then. The primary transportation corridors through Hawthorne are Interstate 95 northbound Exit 14A/Exit 16B overpasses milepost 12 through 13 into Camden Borough before continuing southbound into Middlesex Borough; Route 78 eastbound exit 9 off ramp onto I-95 Northbound past Midtown Philadelphia into Camden Borough; Route 22 westbound exit 1 off ramp onto I-95 Northbound past South Philadelphia into Camden Borough while Route 78 continues east bound); Amtrak passenger trains passing through nearby Middletown make stops at both Englewood Cliffs Railway Station on Rte 381 northwesterly out towards Glassboro Junction where they turn back south towards Philly before continuing east again under I-95past Atlantic City Mall before terminating at Penn Station behind Giants Stadium

This made it the first township to be annexed into a county in New Jersey since Middlesex County was created in 1755. -Since then, Hawthorne has seen some growth as a bedroom community for neighboring towns and villages within Bergen County. -In honor of its history and growth, Hawthorne is now home to several museums, including the Haworth Museum of American Art and the Morris Chair Museum of American Art (both located onsite at the former Ralston Woolen Factory).
