Hawthorne is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Troy City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Hawthorne" (from Old English hwæt and frene) means "farmstead by the brooks." The first settler there was David Hawthorne who arrived in 1764. He may have been related to John Hawthorne who settled in what is now Midland Township before that. In 1823, James Walford built a sawmill on the Raritan River which soon became an important center for lumber production in northeastern New Jersey. In 1839-40, John Purdy bought land irrigated by the river at present-day Hawthorne and developed it into a town named after him, with streets named after his family members: James Walford Avenue, Mary Purdy Avenue, Herbert Purdy Street etc. The first school opened in 1837 and remained open until 1915 when it moved to new premises within the current community of Hawthorne High School which replaced an earlier schoolhouse on Ridge Road. During World War II many of Hawthorne's businesses produced munitions including radar equipment used by allied forces during the war; they closed down after hostilities ended but reopened as small businesses once again afterwards. Afterward Hawthorne experienced some decline due to then high taxes combined with dramatic reductions in its manufacturing base but has since regained lost ground due to suburbanization and other factors over the past few decades
