Hawthorne, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first gun sights were set up in 1825 by one of the early settlers in what is now Hawthorne. They were placed on high hills to assist with target shooting and were not very effective. By 1845, thegun sights had been improved and were used by many commanding officers during the American Civil War as part of their battle management system. In 1875 an ordinance was passed that prohibited citizens from owning handguns without a license from the local police department. This ordinance led to the creation of Haworthynewest Pistol Club which still holds its meetings today and provides instruction on pistol safety and marksmanship to new members. After World War II, gun sight usage decreased because of stricter laws against carrying firearms without a permit or licence in most jurisdictions around the world. However, due to increasing use of online purchasing options for weapons such as rifles and shotguns (the internet being one of humanity's last remaining open frontier), this trend has reversed somewhat with recent restrictions being lifted on sales of assault rifles and other large-capacity firearms across much of America including Hawthorne

That year, an entrepreneur named John Overstreet set up what became known as Overstreet's Gun Sight Company in Hawthorne. The company manufactured and sold pistols and shotguns using iron sights that were mounted on either side of the barrel.
Hawthorne is a borough in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington metropolitan area. Hawthorne was founded on November 3, 1795 by Colonel John Hawthorne and his family from Norwich, England as a rural farming community located along Sussex Avenue in southern Burlington County. On July 1, 1853, the Borough of Hawthorne became a borough under the terms of an act of the New Jersey Legislature which took effect on July 1, 1853. The Act provided for creation of municipalities within Burlington County and for complied with federal requirements for incorporation into cities or townships. On December 14, 1896 – after much discussion and debate – the Borough Council voted to change its name to "Wharton" in honor of James A. Wharton who had given generously towards Borough growth. The first store opened in what is now Hawthorne on Sussex Avenue in 1795 by Colonel John Hawthorne and his family following their arrival from Norwich England. In 1853 Samuel Morse established one of America's first radio transmitters here at 1214 Bluebell Road which helped promote early radio technology throughout America In 1899-1900 regular services were started between Camden and Wilmington utilizing steamboats running down Delaware Bay On October 20th 1906 (the date that Brooklyn Dodgers left for Ebbets Field) residents organized what would become known as "The Drive-in". At that time only five homes dotted the block bounded by Maple Crest Boulevard north to south and Washington Boulevard east to west; today there are over 100 residences surrounded by commercial development including several large chainsaws factories/ tool stores/ gas stations etc., making it one of largest contiguous mixed use areas in North American with more than two million people living within its borders

Gun sights continued to evolve over the years, but eventually became standard on most firearms.
Hawthorne was a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Essex Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to explore what is now Hawthorne was Captain John Smith in 1608 when he built his trading post there on the Hackensack River. The town of Hawthorne grew up around this trading post and until the early 1800s it consisted only of Native American Indian traders and civilians who had no permanent homes or businesses. In 1814, when troops under General James Longstreet burned down Princeton University, Hawthorne's citizens banded together to help rebuild that city and they soon became known as "the Bricklayers of Princeton". In 1838, with the outbreak of the American Civil War, Hawthorne sided with Union forces against Confederate forces and lost its status as a free town but it continued to exist as a rural community until it merged into Newark in 1960. Hawthorne has been nominated for National Historical Register status multiple times but has never been recognized by the US government agency responsible for such recognition because its history does not meet certain criteria set forth by the National Register program. However, raw historical data from various sources dating back to 1795 shows that Hawthorne may have been one of America's first planned towns and that it enjoyed considerable success during its early years as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and good water supply.

In 1807, Hawthorne was incorporated as a township. The town reached its peak of growth during World War II, when it became one of the most heavily bombed areas in the United States.
