Hawthorne, New Jersey is home to the most restrictive gun laws in the United States. The town has a total of only nineteen guns and prohibits any type of firearm ownership without a permit. The town also limits magazine capacity to ten rounds, requires all firearms owners to have at least one lock on their premises, and outlaws handguns with magazines that hold more than twenty-five rounds. One such shooting occurred on October 20th, 2009 when two gunmen shot at three people before escaping into nearby woods. Hawthorne was first settled in 1682 by English colonists under the name of Haverhill. The area now known as Hawthorne was part of Hunterdon Township until 1839 and then Uniontown Borough until 1954. In 1892, Hawthorne became a township within Mercer County and has remained that way since. The original settler were two brothers, Jonathan and John Haworth, who came to this area from England in 1682 with their families. They built a log cabin on what is now known as Main Street and started farming land around it. They also built a house on which the present day courthouse stands. For many years there was only one road into or out of Hawthorne – the main street – so people had to travel through farmland to get to their homes or businesses. In 1795, when Bound Brook Township was created from parts of Hunterdon and Mercer counties, Hawthorne became one of its initial townships along with Glassboro (later Livingston), Garden City (later Westwood), Mount Olivet (later East Rutherford) and Springvale (later Parsippany). However, Bound Brook did not become an independent municipality until 1837 when it split off from Mercer County proper. Boroughs were established within municipalities rapidly during this time period due to various factors including growth in population density; however, because Hawthorne lacked a central business district like those enjoyed by neighboring boroughs, its inhabitants generally resided outside the limits of their respective boroughs for most purposes save transportation and commerce within their own communities; this continued until after World War II when shopping centers developed throughout metropolitan areas such as Camden and New York City which decentralized authority resulting in increased development pressures on smaller communities like Hawthorne that could not cope without open-air shopping malls providing access to large numbers of consumers at prices they could not afford or generate enough economic activity to justify new investment necessary for service delivery such as infrastructure replacement or redevelopment; unfortunately today much of downtown Hawthorne remains vacant although some renovation/maintenance efforts are ongoing primarily affecting facades which represent an interior view only albeit one often severely deteriorated due both age & neglect

Hawthorne is a small town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. The community was named for Ebenezer Hawthorne, an early settler. Hawthorne is located on Route 287 northeast of Newark and west of Bound Brook. It is bordered by the towns of Dumont to the northwest, South Brunswick to the east, and East Brunswick to the south. The first known reference to Hawthorne may date back to 1697 when Nicholas de Monticello referred to it as "Havenham", after his home in England. By 1775, Hawthorne had a whitesmith shop and a few homes. No one lived there until 1827 when seven families moved into what became Hawthorne from Middlesex Township due to land alienation during the revolutionary war era. Hawthorne Quaker Meeting House was built in 1839 and additions were made in 1933-1934 and 1968-1969. It has been used as a church since its construction and currently houses offices for Sussex County Regional Transit Authority (SCRTA). In 1893 Anthony Jugend set up a mercantile business here which he continued until his death in 1971; this business later became called Jugend's Pharmacy & Supply Store Inc., still operating today as part of Summit Medical Supplies Co.. In 1896 James Fenton started farming here with about seventy acres; he soon developed larger farms throughout Sussex County including one near Bound Brook that extended all the way into Mercer County; Fenton's farm remains undisturbed today but portions of it have been Developers' Row redevelopment project which began in 1990s just north of where Fenton's house once stood.
