Hawthorne was founded by Nicholas Hawthorne in 1839 and named after his family's estate in England. The first settler in Hawthorne was Nicholas Hawthorne Sr., who arrived in 1839 and erected a cabin on the site that now stands near the intersection of Route 930 andRoute 880. In 1840, Nicholas' son John Hethcote also set up a cabin here. By 1850, there were six families living here, all of whom were farmers or tenant farmers with extensive acreage holdings around the area. In 1865, when Sussex County was created from parts of Middlesex County, Hawthorne became one of its townships. With about 1,000 residents and only three businesses established within its boundaries within ten years (the first being an early post office), it wasn't until 1870 that any significant growth occurred here as well as elsewhere in Sussex County due to railroads coming through and bringing new workers into villages such as Readington (now Edison) and Toms River (now Paterson). By 1880, however, some form of industrial development had started to take form with tanning pits beginning to be developed along Route 880 north of town while machine shops began opening up east of town near what is now Little Falls Avenue/Route 11 NJ Transit Station. The economic success brought many people to towns like Hawthorne which boasted high schools and churches catering to their needs; some continue to reside there today despite having left their original village homes behind for better opportunities elsewhere. One particularly notable resident who moved to Hawthorne during this time period was George Washington Carver who started out working on an agricultural farm just outside town before moving his operation into Tannery Row where he continued refining sugar cane products until he retired in 1938 aged 95 years old - making him one of only two Americans ever retirement age at 100 or older!
