Hawthorne, NJ is home to the oldest gun mag in America. The first issue of the Haworthian Rifle and Pistol Club's monthly magazine was published on July 1, 1868. The club had a membership of just six people and its goal was to promote rifle and pistol shooting at local fairs. The club continued publication until 1875 when it was replaced by the North Jersey Rifle and Pistol Association's (NJRPA) monthly magazine. JRPA's goals were to promote rifle and pistols shooting at state championships as well as firearm education opportunities for residents of North Jersey. From 1915-1918, JRPA published a quarterly journal called "The Gunfighter". This journal chronicled the activities of NJRPC members during this time period, including matches, shoots, tournaments and features about guns and their history. In 1945, NRA published its own monthly magazine called "Firearm & Archery". This magazine focused on firearms issues with an emphasis on hunting/the outdoors. From 1951-1965, NRA also produced a quarterly journal called "The Shooter" which covered all aspects of target shooting including competition/the Olympics etc.

As handguns became more popular in the United States over the years, magazine magazines became increasingly important for holding additional rounds for use in handguns when required. Additionally, some handgun manufacturers began offering pistols with built-in magazine systems that allowed users to holster their weapons and access additional rounds at will while they are being used. The popularity of pistol magazine systems eventually led to the development of rifles that utilize magazine systems as well, such as AR-15 rifles and Glock pistols. Today, many people choose to carry multiple guns due to increased safety concerns associated with encounters with potential assailants who may be able to take advantage of someone not possessing proper security measures (e.g., carrying only one weapon).

Hawthorne, NJ is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paterson–Passaic Valley region. Hawthorne was founded by English colonists on November 10, 1716 as Horsebridge Township. The name was derived from the word "horde" meaning "a group of people." The first settler in Hawthorne was George Washington and his family who arrived in 1718 from Virginia. He named his community after John Quincy Adams' home state of Massachusetts. The township changed its name to Hawthorne on March 9, 1868 when it became part of the new county of Hunterdon created by New Jersey Governor James Seddon pursuant to Act No. 54 of 1867. At that time, it had a total population of 1,711 residents and included portions of Hackensack and Plainsboro townships also within Hunterdon County. On May 8, 1953, Hawthorne incorporated as a village under the jurisdiction of Paterson with a population exceeding 1,000 inhabitants for the first time ever. In recent years there has been an effort to restore some aspects of Hawthorne's past including preserving its Dutch roots which are evident in many features such as its founding date and naming rights to several local businesses including: A & P grocery store; First National Bank; JCPenney; Ford Motor Company; and Ben Franklin Elementary School which closed in 2007 but has now been reopened as Jane Addams Elementary School with classes starting on September 15th!
