Hawthorne's first post office opened in 1821 and closed in 1827; its last inhabitants were those who lived there from 1827 to 1829. The town began experiencing growth after construction of the Erie Canal made it an easier trip from points east to west than previous routes via Elizabethtown or Mount Holly. By 1830, Hawthorne had a store, two churches, one school and about sixty residents; by 1840 it had three stores, four churches and over one hundred residents.
