Hawthorne is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,433 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hawthorne was platted on December 1, 1795 by Elias Boudinot and James Bowie as part of the Township of Haworth, which was established on November 3, 1793 by an act of the General Assembly. On October 25, 1855 it became a part of Camden and remains so today. The first settler in Hawthorne was Anthony Carondelet who arrived in 1796 aboard his ship "Carondelet". He named the community after John Hawthorne who resided in West Sussex County, England at that time. In 1806 Nathaniel Bacon sold land to John Fenton for $1,000 which he used to build a house and barn on what is now Delaware Avenue. The town's first store opened on Delaware Avenue in 1807 and continued operation until 1840 when it closed due to lack of customers. In 1809 Philipse Heyward built a gristmill on Creek Road near its present site that still stands today - this mill powered the first sawmill in Hawthorne. In 1830 Isaac Darrow erected a frame schoolhouse/ Baptist church which served as both school and religious center for the town for many years until it burned down in 1865 (the present day Methodist Episcopal Church building replaced it). Bacon also donated land for a common agricultural field that became known as "Bacon's Field" or "Barnes Corners." A post office called Bacon had been established at Hawthorne from 1800 to 1814; however, it was discontinued due to lack of mail service from Camden. The name change came about because George Washington Cook contributed money towards erecting an early post office west of Camden and naming it after him – Cookstown (now Bayonne).
