Hawthorne, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun hammer in Hawthorne Township was built by Solomon Purdy in 1848 and also the first rifle barrel made here. The gun hammer became an important tool for farmers during the 19th century because it could be used to turn a hand crank to power a winnowing machine or to get a hoe out from under the ground. The town of Hawthorne began as an agricultural community with 3 businesses and over 100 residents in 1850. In 1860, Hawthorne was incorporated as a municipality with 1,500 residents and 10 businesses. By 1870, Hawthorne had 2 churches and 12 schools; it had become one of the most populous municipalities in Morris County. In 1868-69, David Haines operated what was then known as "the Old Forge forge" on Edgehill Road near present-day Borough Park. This forge produced cannons for use by American troops during World War I and later became home to local mills that processed flour for bread baking and other purposes until they closed down in the 1970s. In 1872-73 when there were two school districts formed within Morris County (Thames Valley District #1 & Atlantic District #2), Hawthorne School District No 5 joined forces with nearby West Orange School District No 6 which also included portions of Edison Township (now North Brunswick). At this time both districts were composed of single grade schools with about 350 students each located adjacent to their respective district lines on two main roads: One served by buses from both towns while the other metered bus service only from Hawthorne until 1961 when services ended completely due to budget cuts caused by Interstate 95 construction projects bypassing South Brunswick entirely

The name "Hawthorne" is derived from the word "Havana" or Havana and means "place where sugar cane is grown." In 1682 John Haworth established a small plantation here. By 1795 it had become an important agricultural center due to its rich soil and good transportation connections. The Haworth family continued to prosper until World War II when they lost their holdings in Cuba to American forces. In 1802 James Fenton bought 2 tracts of land here from the Haworths for £200 cash. He founded Fenton Township which became Hawthorne after he moved his headquarters to this town in 1853 during the first statewide U.S. Census conducted under national military occupation by General Order No. 9 of that year; Hawthorne being then one of three townships in Essex County (the others being West Orange and Newark). Fenton's township was renamed Hawthorne after him on November 14, 1853; but it reverted back to Fenton Township on January 1, 1907 pursuant to an order by Governor Alfred Muhlenberg ordering all boroughs within the state into dissolution because of budgetary deficiencies caused by reductions in state spending following World War I A total of 20 municipalities were placed into bankruptcy throughout New Jersey as a result of government budget cuts known as Operation Union City (1918-1920). These measures included Hawthorne which filed for bankruptcy on October 15, 1918 having been among those municipalities which received notice two weeks earlier via mail notification that their exemption from taxation would be revoked effective December 1st unless they converted their entire paper form system into electronic format within sixty days otherwise all property situated therein would be taxable including any buildings or improvements thereof erected since July 1st 1917 inclusive….This occurred despite pleas from several selectmen who stated that not only would such conversion make no apparent financial gain but also it would enable them to remain politically active while still retaining some degree of control over municipal affairs….Hawthorne was one municipality amongst manyto convert between October 1918 and December 1920…..It should be noted that although most residents did not have time to convert their forms before January 1921 when new regulations went into effect regarding compulsory registration Of Voters all properties subject thereto were taxable regardless…..As a result of its status as a municipality Hawthorne experienced significant economic decline beginning in the early 1920s with much unemployment among its residents…."
