Hawthorne was founded in 1795 by Englishmen who arrived on horseback from Connecticut and Rhode Island. The first post office was established in 1800. In 1827, Hawthorne became a township in Morris County and remained so until 1953 when it became a borough. The borough was formed from parts of two other townships: Kearny and Pleasantville. The original townhomes were built between 1830 and 1840 on land that had been purchased by James Pierpont Mellon from John Dickinson for $10,000. Mellon donated the land to the township for use as a public school district. In 1923, Hawthorne enacted a resolution recognizing the efforts of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel to help support local Jews during World War I by providing them with food, clothing, housing and financial assistance; Heschel later served as mayor of Hawthorne from 1933 to 1945 Rabbi Meir Kahane served as Mayor of Hawthorne from 1983 to 1989 In 1995-1996 Borough Councilwoman Linda McMahon unsuccessfully ran for Borough President against then-Mayor Joseph Napp . She won handily with over 60% of the vote according to unofficial results taken at polling places across the borough that night
