Hawthorne is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. The name "Hawthorne" was given to the community by its founder, George Hawthorne. The first reference to Hawthorne is from an 1837 journal entry by Nathaniel Hawthorne: "In pursuance of my resolution to give my attention entirely to literary and artistic objects within myself, I went out this morning past noon into the woods near our house and found a Growth of Laurel there which has never been seen hereabouts before". Hawthorne's history began with George Hawthorne who founded it in 1800 on land he acquired from John Woolridge. He named it after himself, George Hawthorne. By 1836, the population had grown to 9 people and the post office was opened that year. In 1840-1841, three families moved into the community and started a gristmill which still stands today; these were Isaac Asbury (father), Ebenezer Bickford (son) and Salmon Prynne (grandson). In 1846-1847 local physician Dr Ephraim Morse set up shop in what is now known as Morse House and practiced medicine until his death in 1865. He left behind many medical instruments including one of only two mercury lamps ever made. His son Amos also became a doctor and practiced for many years before dying at age 80 in 1933. There are several buildings associated with Morse Street – most notably his white tenement building which still stands today next door to his son's former surgery room where he did operations for patients during his days as an MD. In 1899-1900 architect Edward Halsey designed two Bungalows – one now known as Haworth Court on Broadway between Washington Avenue and Park Boulevard (now part of Route 206) while another more recently erected home called Llewellyn Place exists off Sussex Drive just north of Route 202 east of Interstate 95 - both were finished in 1901 but remain standing today providing evidence that Hawthornians were quite mobile during this time period! When World War II hit America Hawkswoodians rallied around their local National Guard unit serving through all stages of war including training camps across North Africa then Europe then back home again! After V-E Day 1945 some returned home but most chose not to return after being displaced or scared by what they saw happening back home During McCarthyism few dared open their doors again leastways not publicly however many continued keeping close ties with friends & family who lived elsewhere

Hawthorne is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Union City, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Hawthorne was Nicholas Hathaway who arrived in 1795. He named his township after Hawthorne, England where he had been born. Nathaniel Hawthorne settled here in 1827 and started a tannery that became one of the largest tanneries in the region. In 1869, he donated land to form what is now South Haworth Park and also founded Hawthorne Academy which later became Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). In 1873, two brothers – George Atherton and John Dolan – organized a group of fifteen men to purchase 1,200 acres (500 ha) of forest around present-day Hawthorne for $1 per acre ($10 per hectare). They named their grant "The Forest Ownership Society" and began expanding it into other townships in Essex County until it reached as far north as Hackensack and east to Sayreville. The society irrigated crops on its property while using power from an sawmill located some distance away on Deer Mill Road. The mill closed down during the Great Depression but has been restored and currently operates as an attraction attraction known as Old North State Mills with hands-on exhibits about mills throughout New Jersey history According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all of it land.
