The first settlers in Hawthorne were Dutch and English colonists who arrived in 1674. In 1812, the town was incorporated as part of Middlesex County. It became an unincorporated community after Middlesex County disbanded in 1912. The area that would become Hawthorne was first settled by English colonists in 1686 as part of the township of Hackensack. In 1712, the town boundaries were changed to encompass what is now Hawthorne and some other townships in Middlesex County. Hawthorne was incorporated as a borough on April 15, 1916, from portions of Newark and Carteret Township. The original name for Hawthorne was Westfield though it reverted to its original status as a borough on December 12, 1951. Hawthorne's strategic location has led to its attractiveness for businesses and entrepreneurs; it is home to several high-technology companies including Qualcomm and Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. Hawthorne was founded in 1795 by Captain John Haworth, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named for Sir Samuel Hawthorne, an English soldier and judge who fought in the American Revolution. Captain Haworth developed a farmstead near Hawthorne and began to trade with the surrounding countryside. In 1812, he sold his land to James Waddell and moved his family to Hawthorne. Waddell became the first postmaster in Hawthorne and built a large home there. In 1814, General Nathaniel Banks invaded New Jersey with an armyseeking support from fellow Patriot states against Mexican forces occupying California. On July 4 of that year, Banks's army crossed the Delaware River into New Jersey at Trenton and marched upriver to attack Philadelphia. A group of townsfolk gathered around Captain Haworth's house to watch as Banks's troops passed through their town on their way northward. The captain's descendants still live in downtown Trenton today and maintain a small presence in local history by hosting events honoring their ancestor(s). In 1817, Captain Haworth donated land (now known as North Bridge Road) across the Delaware River from Trenton to form what is now called West Point Park. This donation made Hawthorne one of the first townships in New Jersey to be established pursuant to the Township Act of 1792. The park is bounded on its east side by North Bridge Road; its west side by Whitehead Avenue; its north side by Princeton Street; and its south side by Raritan Bay Boulevard. The development of West Point Park led to increased traffic congestion on North Bridge Road which necessitated the construction of two bridges over Raritan Bay Boulevard: one at West Point Park Drive and another just south of it at Boerum Hill Road (later renamed Southbridge Boulevard). The original bridge was replaced in 1957 when a new bridge was constructed over Raritan Bay Boulevard at what is now Easton Parkway (now Princeton Street). Today, both bridges remain intact as part of West Point Park’s infrastructure. Hawthorne experienced some significant growth during World War II due largely to military production facilities located within or adjacentto the townspeople themselves (eastern Boundary Rd., Whitehead Ave., Princeton St., etc.).During World War II particular industrial areas within or adjacentto Hawthorne enjoyed high demand for goods resultingin strong economic growth for these areas especially eastern Boundary Rd./Whitehead Ave./Princeton St../Raritan Bay Blvd/.
