It remained named Washington Township until 1959 when it was renamed Hawthorne-Harrison County after its first Mayor at that time Harrison J. Ford Jr..

Famed author Nathaniel Hawthorne lived and worked here for many years beginning in 1837 before moving to Salem, Massachusetts where he died in 1852. A few miles away is the Nathaniel Hawthorne House which now contains a museum commemorating both author and community life. Hawthorne Township was established on February 14, 1799 by order of General George Washington as an agricultural township under the jurisdiction of Middlesex County; it was consolidated with neighboring Hunterdon Township on July 1, 1814. Hawthorne was formed on March 1, 1871 when it was combined with Rahway and East Brunswick. The original name for Hawthorne was "Fremont". Hawthorne has a humid continental climate (Köppen: Dfa), typical of much of New Jersey. Winters are cold and brief with occasional bitterly cold spells; summers are warm and relatively dry with somerequent days that reach 90 degrees F (32 degrees C). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Hawthorne has a humid subtropical climate. The history of Hawthorne begins with one man – Isaac Newton Hawthorne – who purchased 640 acres (2 km²) in 1793 from Nicholas Pemberton for $1,040 ($ as of 2019). He named his land "Hawthorn" after his home town in England where he had been born two years earlier. After years of development by him and his family, the first housing developments were built on the property around 1830. In 1821, Isaac's son Joshua took over management and continued to develop the land until his death in 1851; Joshua's widow Mary took over management until her death in 1865. In 1861-1865 three brothers - John Alexander Cunningham II (Jr.), Maurice Cunningham (Maurice III) - developed an area now known as Northumberland Avenue which ran east-west through Hawthorne between Rahway Road and Maple Avenue near today's Northwestern High School; this development is also sometimes considered part of Hawthorne's history because it remains extant to this day despite being farmed by others for many decades afterwards. With its new homes came new businesses such as a grocery store/cafeteria called "The Grapes", later renamed "Cunningham Bros." after Maurice III died in 1916; commercial development continued into the 20th century though there have been no recent updates to what may once have been one of America’s largest shopping districts back then (). A post office operated at Hawthorn from December 14, 1836 until May 6, 1850; during that time there were only six residents living within its boundaries due largely to travel difficulties caused by the lack of transportation available at that time across rural Hunterdon County beyond convenient farms or villages such as Rahway and East Brunswick which did not yet exist along Route 9W then leading southward into Sussex County via Princeton Junction (). In 1951 an addition block off present-day Park Street served as USPS' local dropoff location while Main Street still served as service road providing access from Northumberland Avenue to both Rahway Road and Maple Avenue thru today’s Borough Hall building however all mail currently delivered via USPS’ current services stops at Borough Hall rather than going any further northbound or southbound thru Park Street having become non-existent since then following major infrastructure improvements made within Thurber Township adjacent to Borough Hall .
