Hawthorne, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,757 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of bipods in Hawthorne comes from the writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1851. He used the term to describe a type of walking stick that was popular amongst pioneers during the American Revolution. At that time, bipods were typically made from two pieces of wood united by a piece of leather or other material.

The town's history can be traced back to 1795 when two Revolutionary War soldiers named John and Jonathan Hawthorne bought land near what is now the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Route 23 South in order to build Fort Hawthorne - a military post that would serve as a warning against British incursions into New Jersey during the war. The fort opened on October 21st 1795 and served until 1800 when it was abandoned due to American victory over Britain at Saratoga Mountain; however, some remnants remain today including several cannonballs still buried inside Fort Hawthorne Park along with examples of Native American architecture which were once used by local farmers for their corn crops

Boroughhood did not last long though; on April 15, 1903, it merged back into Rahway Township. The economy of Hawthorne is largely agricultural with some Manufacturing activities such as manufacturing automobiles and parts for boats and other vessels that are exported to locations such as Europe or Asia. There are also smaller businesses involved in various service sectors including retail sales around the town center and manufacturing within small businesses scattered throughout the community
