Hawthorne, New Jersey is home to the Elfin Hills Observatory and Binoculars Collection. The observatory was founded in 1868 by Dr. George Fenton. It was originally located on Hawthorne Heights, but moved to its current location in 1936. The collection includes over 2,000 binoculars from around the world. The first binoculars were made in China in the early 1800s. In 1868, Dr. George Fenton created the first ever binocular system with his two-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and 20x50 mm eyepieces. He named his new device "The Haworthian." In 1936, Dr. Franklin Payson purchased the Elfin Hills Observatory and began restoration of it including restoring all of its equipment from the original 1868 building including both telescopes and binoculars! The collection now contains over 2,000binoculars from around the world!

A year later, he published a volume of short stories entitled "The House with the Head of Snow" which depicted life in upstate New York. In 1879, Hawthorne published an additional volume of short stories called "The Minister's Family". These texts were set in the fictional town of Grosse Pointe on the Michigan shore. The popularity of these works led to him being offered a job as editor at Harper and Brothers. He accepted and worked there until his death in 1893.

Hawthorne was founded in 1795 by John Hawthorne and his brothers-in-law Nicholas Vail and Amos Kendall as a small settlement on the east bank of the Passaic River. They named it for General Lucius Cornelius Washington, who had been killed in action during the American Revolutionary War. The land around Hawthorne then passed through various families until it was given to John Pemberton in 1869. Hawthorne has experienced many ups and downs over its history; however, its culture has always been strong and unique to that community. Its residents are known for their hard work ethic, their love of nature, and their hearty appetite for food. One of the most popular dishes found throughout Hawthorne is baked ham which is typically prepared with white bread dough that is deep-fried until golden brown; this dish features sage and onion stuffing inside a crusty ham slice

Hawthorne is a small town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 751 at the 2000 census. It was created as part of the consolidation of several villages in Union County on February 14, 1907. The name "Hawthorne" comes from the English word "haunt," meaning to haunt or visit often. Hawthorne is located southeast of Newark and northwest of Glassboro. The first settler in what would become Hawthorne was Nicholas Haddad and his family who arrived in 1778 from England. They were followed by others over the next few years including John Heard, Abraham Morse (Morse's brother), Nicholas Haddad's son Nathaniel and daughter Polly; Ebenezer Cook (a carpenter); Joshua Day (a merchant); Peter Smith; Samuel Marsh; James Cramer (a tailor); Moses Brown; Reuben White; Joseph Safford (an innkeeper). Many of these early settlers came from eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut. In 1814, when Union County was formed from parts of Middlesex and Monmouth counties, Hawthorne became one of its initial townships. The first post office in Hawthorne was established on July 1, 1824 by Act of New Jersey Legislature with Pemberton as its first postmaster. That same year saw the founding of a school district which included Hawthorne Village School District #2 which served students between Pleasant Valley Road and South Main Street east of Route 22 near Whatley’s Mill stream to the west side of Route 22 just beyond what is now called Greenwood Avenue SEPTA bus stop/bus stop plaza between Hawkins Drive SEPTA bus stop/parking lot across Hawkins Drive SEPTA bus stop frontage road east side) until it closed down on September 30, 1971 due to budget cuts by Transit Paramour Incorporated before becoming part-time operations for Haworthia Township Schools #1 through #6 operated out-of-town because there wasn't enough enrollment within our township boundaries for us to offer private instruction consequent to state mandated competition among public schools running daycare centers during that time period also other businesses had opened up along Utopia Road providing jobs for kids like myself I started driving my own business when I turned 16 years old starting out as a cleaner then getting my driver’s license so I could start taking care Of customers inside & outside home back then no internet or cell phone service so you had To go outside & ask people For their help if You needed help finding something Or asking directions
