Hawthorne is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–willingboro–Fayetteville Combined Statistical Area. Hawthorne was founded near present-day Plainsboro by English colonists in 1678 as "Hardenborough." In 1783, it became part of Princeton Township and in 1814 it became a separate township, named for General John Starkhawke. Hawthorne's first store opened on Market Street in 1823. The first post office was established at Hawthorne on November 10, 1825. The community experienced some growth during the years after World War II when an number of factories were built thereabouts. However, since then Hawthorne has steadily declined in population and economic importance; its only major industry now is agriculture. In 1951, Hawthorne voters passed a measure making it a full borough with voting rights not restricted to residents of Princeton Township or Hunterdon County residents only (the Borough would have been divided into two areas had they gone ahead with the plan). On July 1st of that year, 1987 - just over 50 years after incorporation - Hawthorne voted to become unincorporated again through a special election process which allowed anyone who lived within its borders to apply for membership without having to go through the township hall or even attend council meetings (this effectively ended all township activities and functions). There are currently no plans or proposals being made to reincorporate back into either Princeton Township or Hunterdon County government as this would effectively mean that both municipalities would cease to exist completely within their own boundaries...

The town was founded by John Hawthorne in 1814 as a result of an effort to influence the development of Morristown and provide better access to water resources for the community's farmers. Hawthorne named his new community after Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The first post office in Hawthorne opened on October 15, 1815. The first settler in Hawthorne was George Stephenson. In 1820, Hubbard-Hamilton House became home to New Jersey's second state government and its executive council; it remained so untilVote 10 (October 8, 1827) replaced it with State House #2 (now known as Statehouse Annex). In 1828, General James Ketchum relieved Colonel Nicholas Brady from command of British forces occupying Morris County during the American Revolutionary War and renamed it "Hawthorne." By 1830, many residents had moved away from Hawthorn because they were dissatisfied with then-Governor Andrew Johnson's policies towards them such as low taxes and high prices for goods imported into their towns by African Americans. Many people who stayed decided to form a pro-Johnson group called "The Citizens' Committee" which lobbied unsuccessfully against Johnson's re-election that year. In 1830–31, when Johnson returned to power following his successful campaign against Samuel Morse Sr., he increased taxes even more than before while also cutting funding for local education and health care programs vowing to reduce township coffers even further without any recompense from taxpayers.. Around this time too some men began working on what would become known as Maplewood Road – an important trade route connecting New York City with Philadelphia – which led directly into downtown Morrisville where goods could be bought or sold before being transported back out again along Maplewood Road
