Hawthorne was founded by George Washington Hawthorne and his wife Sophia in 1795. They named their settlement after one of General Washington's soldiers who had been killed in action near present day Perth Amboy, New Jersey that year. The Haworthes operated a mill until 1827 when they sold it to James Smith. Smith ran the mill until 1840 when he leased it to Isaac Hecker who ran it until 1868 when it was bought by John Harkness Sr. It passed through several hands before being purchased by Harry Aiken in 1925 and operated as an agricultural feed mill until 1958 when it closed down due to lack of customership. In 1957, Hawthorne residents organized themselves into a town government with a mayor and five council members; however, this organization did not last long because most residents were too busy working at the mills to take on such an important role in their community. In 1960, Hawthorne became an unincorporated community again although there are still some references to its existence throughout the years thanks to old newspaper articles and other sources from that time period.
