Hawthorne was founded in 1788 by Ezra Shaw and his family as a small farming community on the eastern edge of what is now Hunterdon County. In 1827, when John Marshall took office as U.S. Senator from New Jersey, he decided to move Hawthorne eastward into the then new township of Camden because it had been designated for him within the boundaries of that county but no other townships were given this designation. The village grew slowly until it exploded in population during World War II due to wartime military construction projects in and around Hawthorne. The post office was established at Hawthorne on November 6, 1828, under authority from Dunellen Township which had been formed two years earlier based on an act of the General Assembly passed on October 15, 1826. The first postmaster was Samuel Biddle who served until 1830; he was followed by Obadiah Brown who served until 1840; David Baird serving from 1841 to 1850; Moses Howland serving from 1850 to 1860; Elijah Purdy serving from 1860 to 1870; and George Welsh serving from 1870 to 1880. During this time period only one house was built in Hawthorne and all mail went through Dunellen before being sent via horseback or wagon across trackless territory over open country to Philadelphia where it arrived by stagecoach or packet boat finally reaching Newark after days or weeks journey (the early mail trains did not enter into town). In 1888 there were 8 residents living at Hawthorne while 12 residents lived nearby in neighboring Dunellen and South Plainfield villages combined with their animals together constituting 54% of the village's total acreage (the average size of each farm household at that time ranged between 2 and 4 acres). By 1920 there were only 41 residents living at Hawthorne while 136 resided nearby with their animals providing 63% of Village's total acreage (the average size of each farm household again ranged between 2 and 4 acres). The last resident moved out after 1990 when they lost their property rights due to eminent domain proceedings brought against them by local authorities following disinvestment in their village by various commercial interests including real estate development plans announced shortly before they left having employed many local workers during their tenure including some key members of its original management team who had stayed behind despite losing their jobs) leading eventually to its dissolution as a result of extenuating circumstances surrounding economic decline among other similar struggling villages throughout Hunterdon County during that decade associated with changing patterns related both nationally and locally relative to land values resulting primarily from increased access developed opportunities instead dominated largely by large suburban areas located near major airports developments along Interstate 95 characterized respectively as "new" or "old" downtowns representing significant changes occurring within central NJ since Hawthorn's heyday although much about those times still remains classified Class 3 information pursuant than Top Secret level security levels currently enjoyed by its former inhabitants although much has changed since then

Hawthorne, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Hawthorne was John Thomson from Scotland who came in 1795 and settled on a farm near what is now called Fleming Street. The town began as a small village located just south of present day Hawthorne Road and east of Ridge Road. In 1838, when Mercer County was created, Hawthorne was included within it and continued to serve as the primary cultural center for the region. In 1851, Reverend Amos Tilton organized an agricultural society in Hawthorne which helped promote new varieties of fruits and vegetables; this led to the establishment of a fruit orchard on School Road that still thrives today. Other early benefactors to Hawthorne include William Penn (the founder of Pennsylvanian University) who donated land for a school; Drury Lane Theatre Company which opened its doors in 1875; Mrs. Alfred Hess (founder of Hess's grocery store); Mrs. Wm Crouse ($1 million gift from Crouse family member Harry Cadogan); and former Mayor James J. Sweeny (elected mayor twice before making his retirement). Hawthorne also experienced significant growth during World War II with construction taking place on both Ridge Road and School Road leading directly to local factories such as Ford Motor Company and General Motors plants adjacent to where they were built today including Oakhurst Drive across from Ford Plant No 1 open since 1959Old Township High School now used by West Camden Schools sports teams Middle/High School & Charter school are all located here too

In 1827, the first post office was established in Hawthorne and began operations. The village gradually grew as more residents arrived and construction began on the first schoolhouse in 1829. By 1875, Hawthorne had two churches and a population of around 100 people. By 1916, the population had grown to 1,500 people and by 1951 it had reached its current size of around 6,000 people
