Hasbrouck Heights is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Hasbrouck Heights was founded by Nicholas Hasbrouck in 1795. He and his family were farmers and traders who grew corn, beans, wheat, potatoes and other vegetables on their farmstead near present-day Livingston Avenue and Ridge Road. The village had a gristmill until 1840 when it became an flour mill. In 1872, the first post office was established in Hasbrouck Heights with Wm. Hickey as the first officer. In 1892, the name of the post office changed to Hasbrouck Heights after Major General James Fenton (1768-1846), who served as Mayor of Newark from 1865 to 1867 and as military governor of New Jersey from 1846 to 1850 under President James K. Polk's administration. In 1902, Havemeyer Manufacturing Company acquired what later became known as Consolidated Telephone & Telegraph Company (CT&T) which operated local telephone service for residents within its boundaries until 1984 when it merged into American Telephone & Telegraph Corporation (AT&T). The original white frame buildings that comprise most of today's downtown are from this time period including some that still stand today including The Masonic Temple which was built in 1896 by lawyer Julius Scherrer along with many other business buildings on Ridge Road across frompresent day Edison High School; originally part of ATC’s corporate headquarters complex called “The Towers” and now home to NJIT’s Doherty College campus It should be noted that all these structures were not destroyed until 1984 when AT&T moved out but much oldertimeweathered examples can still be seen such as Scherrer’s building on Livingston Ave., now known as US Deptford Elementary School ground floor which housed pupil classrooms between 1909-1913 before moving upto its current location next door at 10 Livingston Ave.; also prominent early 20th century structure on Ridge Road across from present day Edison High School originally partsof ATC’s corporate headquarters complex called “The Towers” now home to NJIT’s Doherty College campus; Formerly home to Chatham Insurance Agency which closed down around 1920 prior to becoming known as Chatham National Bank Hadleigh Loring Post Office located just south off Route 9E between Princeton Rd./Ridge Rd and Maplewood Ave., opened November 12th 1870 having been erected by Capt John Loring PostmasterGeneral during Reconstruction Era thru act Oct 25 1862 - reopens January 6th 1863 after reconstruction has ended
