Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Hasbrouck Heights was Captain John Smith on his voyage from England to America in 1608. He named it Mount Prospect because he saw high hills near where the community now stands and thought that this would be a good place for a settlement. In 1711, George Washington founded Princeton University in nearby West Orange and soon after moved his family to Hasbrouck Heights with its then- nil population of just 10 people. The original town site was located on what is now Montclair Boulevard and Ridge Road today; however, much of the original town boundaries remain within the Borough today including portions of Haddon Township (now North Brunswick) as well as parts of Englewood Cliffs and Paramus Hills. The community's namesake comes from Major General Israel Putnam's farm several miles east of where it now stands which many believe bore some resemblance to Jerusalem or Hebron in present-day Palestine or even Bethlehem/Ezraville in present-day Israel - all three places being mentioned often by early American settlers who were seeking an answer to their questions about these mysterious places they had never seen before.
