Hasbrouck Heights is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. Hasbrouck Heights was formed on May 20, 1868 from portions of Rahway and Dumont Township. Its name comes from Haddonfield (Old Dutch: "Hausbreucke") which means "hill top". The first settler in what would become Hasbrouck Heights was George Doherty who arrived in 1827 from County Clare, Ireland. Doherty's farmstead stood on what is now Sixth Street between Park Avenue and Tenth Street. The first school in Hasbrouck Heights was founded in 1872 by Reverend A.M. Singer and his wife Emma as the East Dumont School District No. 3 Schoolroom #1 near present-day Seventh Avenue and Douglass Boulevard). In 1865, the Borough of Rahway came into being with a merger of three townships including Dumont and parts of Rahway (including what is now Hasbrouck Heights). At that time there were only about 150 residents living within its boundaries; however by 1870 there had grown to over 1,000 residents due to waves of Italian immigrants arriving during the mid 1800s along with other new settlers including Germans, Irish Catholics, Eastern Orthodox Christians and Scandinavian farmers/ fishermen arriving during that decade or so during America's great migration period known as the Gilded Age (). So strong was this influx that by 1875 all but two out of twelve schools in Rahway were closed because children were not getting enough food to eat (). Even today many Thanksgivings are celebrated at oldRahwayschool where much has changed since then! As late as 1928 notes one resident historian “the once thriving town [Rahway] has shrunken slowly since then to a few scattered streets surrounded by high walls” while another reports that “not one home remains standing among those once numbering more than 350” . Despite these challenges some people persevered through tough times like when taxes went up 100% during World War II because demand for goods made from munitions Factories increased—a situation still faced today especially if you live within close proximity to any manufacturing plants! Accordingly despite dwindling resources such as housing costs becoming too high for many families but also due to advances in technology aided by globalization it still remains an ethnic majority community composed almost entirelyof Italians according to 2018 Census data . Hasbrouck Heights is a borough in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York Metropolitan Area. The first settlers in what is now Hasbrouck Heights were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. They named their new community after Hasbrouck, a Dutch town in Flanders that they had seen on maps. In 1809, General James McDowell's army passed through Jersey City and stopped at Hasbrouck Heights on its way to battle with Andrew Jackson's forces at Pea Ridge. The town was renamed for General John Bemis until his death in 1847. In 1854, American Civil War veteran Major-General George Washington Butler moved from Newark to Hasbrouack Heights and began to build an estate called "Butler's Woods". After Butler's death in 1865, his widow continued to live there and it became known as "Butlerstown". The borough played a significant role in the history of Princeton University; during World War II it served as a training ground for U.S military units stationed in Japan. In 1954, the Borough Council redesignated Hasbrouck Heights as a township so that it could be annexed by Jersey City proper; however, this annexation did not happen because Township officials felt that having two different names would cause confusion among residents. In 1972–1973, Hasbrouck Heights received municipal assistance under the Community Development Assistance Program (CDA). This program helped municipalities become more self-sufficient by providing funding for infrastructure projects such as police cars and parks. As a result of CDA assistance, construction began on several new businesses and residences including Midtown Park which opened to the public in 1974 and remains one of Jersey City’s most popular areas today
