Hasbrouck Heights is a borough in the New Jersey County of Bergen. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. Hasbrouck Heights is located on the east side of Hackensack River, bordered by North Paramus to the south and west, Elizabeth to the north and east and Willingboro Township to the northeast. The town was first settled by Dutch immigrants in 1664. It may have been named for Hendrick Hasbrouck (1624-1692), an officer in New Netherland who served as sheriff from 1685 to 1689 and mayor of Amsterdam from 1691 until his death. In 1709, Peter Minuit purchased some land from Nicholas de Vries for $200 per acre. These early settlers were primarily Mennonites who established a gristmill, which still stands today, and began growing corn, beans, potatoes, onions and other vegetables. In 1837, two brothers – Abraham Fishwick and Israel Ziegler – founded what would become known as Hasbrouck Heights Cemetery. The cemetery opened with burials for 132 residents on July 1st of that year. The first interment was that of Isaac Myers who died in 1835 aged just 24 years old after serving three terms as mayor of Hackensack Township. The cemetery closed in 1953 but has been open periodically since then for graveside services; most recently on Memorial Day Weekend each year since 2014. During World War II many Seventh-day Adventists (SDA) lived in Hasbrouck Heights due to its proximity to Morristown while they awaited evacuation orders issued through their headquarters at Princeton University during the war effort: "Most SDA members living within easy reach of Morristown experienced direct bombing or shelling during Nazi Germany’s blitzkrieg against Europe" (Luce). Consequently there are numerous church buildings dating back to this time remaining standing such as Zion Lutheran Church which is also noteworthy for its Richardsonian Romanesque Revival architecture complete with steeple; both were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 under category “Church architecture” Hazlitt's Department Store - built 1913 Newark & Essex Railroad Depot - built 1915 Hazlitt's Department Store - demolished 1951 Zion Lutheran Church - built 1913 Hackensack River Bridge - built 1904

Hasbrouck Heights is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The origin of the name has been disputed, with some believing it to be derived from Hasbrooke, a small hamlet located on what is now East North Street in the borough and from Dutch Hasbekkerhof (house of carpenters), while others believe it comes from Habruckheimer or Habsburgerhof meaning "upper house" in German. The first European settler to arrive in what is now Hasbrouck Heights was Nicholas de Groot who arrived in 1681 and built a farm on land that now includes most of Hasbrouck Heights. De Groot's son-in-law Abraham Ortelius moved to hardship in 1712 after losing his fortune as an investor with the Dutch West India Company. Ortelius had come overland from Amsterdam via Philadelphia and founded one of America's first major towns, Paterson, NJ when he settled there in 1712 In 1814, George Washington was visiting Morristown when he called upon General Howe at Richards Tavern for dinner on October 15th. After dinner Washington walked through town to White Sands Hill where he sat down for his last meal before his death two days later on October 17th On November 3rd 1814 General John Pemberton launched an attack against Fort Delaware which resulted in the capture of British Commander Lord Cornwallis by Indian forces under Lt Colonel Thomas MacKenzie near present day Mount Holly Township . On November 7th Genl Pemberton surrendered at Monmouth Junction without any battle taking place The village of Hasbrouck Heights started as a tiny hamlet called Habrockierville withinam Wall Township east side mainly composed rural farmsteads with several scattered houses including: Pickering House, Hornblower House - both were added to Borough map 1/2 mile north east corner Of lot 25 Inhabitants: Nicholas de Groot 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16; Abraham Ortelius; John Pemberton; James Mercer; Ebenezer Cooke Jr.; Daniel Craig Sr.; Elias Putnam Jr.; Israel Putnam Sr.; Jacob Putnam Jr.; Cornelius Vanderbilt
The Hasbrouck Heights neighborhood in New Jersey was first settled in the 17th century. The area now known as Hasbrouck Heights was part of Middlesex County before it was transferred to Union County in 1849. The population of the neighborhood increased rapidly during the 19th century, due to waves of immigrants arriving from Eastern Europe. In 1881, a park was established in the area, named for General Israel Putnam, who had fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. senator from New York. The park remained open until 1959.
