Harrison is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Harrison Township was called "Harrison" on March 7, 1777 by Captain John Smith of the Virginia Company's forces during the American Revolution. On September 20, 1779, George Washington and his troops passed through Harrison township while marching from Trenton to Princeton. On October 3, 1781, General George Washington's force under Colonel James Tryon marched into Harrison township from Princeton after defeating an army of British soldiers under Lieutenant Governor Thomas Johnson at Monmouth Bridge. The Battle of Monmouth Bridge helped win the independence of America and gave Harrison township its name. In 1814-1815 Major General Edward Braddock's army invaded New Jersey during the War of 1812 and burned much of what is now Harrison Township including some homes built before that time. The community was settled primarily by Ulster Scots immigrants who arrived in large numbers during the mid-19th century to work on farms in Middlesex County near Philadelphia. Many became farmers themselves and many remain active in agriculture to this day (the largest single landowner being Quaker Oasis Farms LLC).
