Harrison, NJ is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 3,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the Hackensack River. Harrison was founded in 1755 by the Native Americans as Haverhill Township. Harrison became incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1892. The name of the town comes from George Washington's Headquarters during his military expedition against the French in 1763-64 called "Harrison's Expedition." The first settler and namesake of Harrison was John Harrison (1735-1810). He was a Quaker who purchased land near what is now Harrisonburg Township in 1756 from Nicholas Fenton. He built a log cabin hereabouts and named it after himself, which he called "Haverhill". In 1772 he married Anne Southwick and they had three children: John (1772-1836), Martha (1775-1844) and Randolph (1779-1852). They all moved to Philadelphia where John worked as an attorney. In 1807 he sold his interest in Haverhill to James Caldwell for $2,500 cash. This allowed him to become one of the first Indian traders within city limits of Philadelphia because Caldwell had been granted immunity from British taxation by King George III at Queen Anne's accession in 1702. The family returned to Harrison about 1840 when Randolph bought 1 million acres west of Philadelphia for $20 per acre with gold sulphur mines underlying it that were soon developed into what are now known as Rockefeller Center developments thereon - making Randolph one of America's richest men until those activities were nationalized following World War II through Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal programs

Harrison was founded on December 11, 1788 by George Washington and his army as a station on the Delaware and Hudson Canal. After being abandoned by the canal company in 1811, it became an agricultural community with five stores and a post office. In 1834, Harrison's first school opened and it remained open until 1924. As an agricultural community that relied heavily on farming activities such as raising cows and pigs, Harrison had few opportunities to develop its economy beyond agriculture until after World War II when nearby Union City began experiencing large-scale industrial development. This led to increased economic investment in Harrison which has helped support local businesses including several banks and businesses related to manufacturing such as Carrier Aircraft Corporation (now known as United Airlines).
