There is a long and complicated history of the use of gun lights in Harrison, New Jersey. One early reference to the lights comes from a deed dated 1821 which references a store called "Harrison's Arms". The arms store was located at what is now the corner of High and Market Streets. In that document, it is noted that "a lighted gun carriage will be seen going to market" and that "guns made use of this light by night." Harrison, New Jersey is a small town located in Sussex County, New Jersey. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-anchored metropolitan area. The name "Harrison" was given to the town by General Philip Sheridan in 1833 during his march through Sussex County on his way to meet General George Washington at Princeton. The name may be derived from Harrison Ford, who grew up in nearby Paterson and attended Harrison High School there before going on to play football for Pittsburg State University and then Yale University. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town had a total area of , of which (or 99%) was land and (or 1%) was water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,834 people, 553 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 33 people per square mile (13/km²). There were 636 housing units at an average density of 24 per square mile (10/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population. There were 553 households out of which 36% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them, 58% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 20

The town was founded in 1795 by George Washington and his family as part of what would become Morris County. It was then known as Harrison Township and changed its name to Harrison in 1876 when it became a separate township within Mercer County. In 1941, the township became an incorporated village after being approved by the New Jersey General Assembly. After years of decay and neglect, Harrison's first post-World War II community development effort began in the early 1990s with construction of a public library, new roads and parks, and renovations to several homesaderies.
