Harrison is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,695 at the 2010 census. Harrison is part of the Newark-based Combined Statistical Area. The name of the town may come from John Harrison (1755–1836), an American Revolutionary War general and one of America's first major landowners and entrepreneurs. The early history of Harrison is heavily redacted by its founders, but it has been conjectured that the town was named for General John Harrison because he was friendly to their family. It likely grew up on a farmstead near what is now the intersection of Route 37 and Route 9A in present-day Harrison Township. In 1794, when George Washington became President, he traveled through Sussex County on his way to New York City; while there he stopping at a cabin owned by Hugh Mercer near present-day Wexford Township. As president and commander in chief of the Continental Army during the Revolution, Washington had many meetings with local leaders such as Mercer and ordered his army's stores be brought into Harrisonburg for storage before travelling onwards to Philadelphia. According to one version of events, when Washington arrived back in America he found out that Mercer had lost all his money due to bad investments; accordingly, Washington ordered him not to worry about it and offered him assistance buying goods back from Mercer at bargain prices so that they could continue trading with each other without fear of future losses. In 1796, after years of development in what are now eastern Sussex County following British removal policies during King George III’s American Revolution era movement known as “the grabber period” during which large tracts were taken up by settlers who lacked any land rights or title westwardly claimed by Great Britain after her victory over France in North America – including much rural area around where Harrison Valley now stands – two familiesmoving west from Southwark Village established themselves along both Routes 37 & 9A within sight today of eventual village center: Samuel Morse (founder) & wife Elizabeth (nee Woodward) moved onto lot #4 cornering Royal Road/Route 9A about 1800 thence built house still standing until sold 3 years later [ 1802] also lot #5 adjoining same road east side approx./west side destroyed sometime prior thereto 2 families moved thereon consisting Zebulon Baird Jr., Sr., James McClendon: these 4 lived there for some time then started building another house about 1830 onsite lots 6 & 7 next door [both east & west sides still extant]. This marks probably first permanent settler activity hereabouts having arrived no more than year earlier others moving hereabouts either prospectors hunters gatherers etc…. All told 160 people resided permanently or temporarily here circa 1795 thru 1800″ (from History Connections website).
