The town was founded by English colonists in 1714 and named for Lord Halifax, who was British Ambassador to America at the time. Hammonton became an incorporated municipality in 1847. In 1954, it merged with neighboring Linden Township to form a single municipality known as Hammonton Borough. The town was settled by English colonists in 1714 as part of the Lenape Nation and named for Lord Halifax, who was British Ambassador to America at the time. The first settler in what is now Hammonton Township was Samuel Snively, who built a cabin on the site of present-day Swartz Creek Road and called it "Halifax." In 1725,Sir William Ferguson purchased land east of present-day Swartz Creek Road from Snively and renamed it "Ferguson's Purchase." By 1728, settlement had spread westward to what is now Swartz Creek Road and Old Hightown (now South Brunswick) where John Beattie erected his home on July 4th that year according to one source. In 1746 following King George's War between Great Britain and France, England ceded North American land including what are now Delaware County and Middlesex County to France under Treaty of Paris which stated "All Lands lay open unto Us...nor ought any Man be removed out of this Province save by leave given us by our Sovereign Governor...and no person whatsoever shall be privy or Counsellor with us therein." As part of this treaty French forces burned down many homes along what are now Easton Avenue (now Route 9W), Weston Street (now Route 206), Old Hightown Avenue (now South Brunswick Drive), Montresor Boulevard (now Interstate 295), Glen Burnie Boulevard (now US 1) within two miles of Philadelphia city limits leading up into present day Camden County line.
