During its time at Hammonton Academy, the Morse Telescope had an impressive collection of astronomy tools including telescopes (of different sizes), microscopes, rulers/compasses/watchmakers tools, books on optics and photography, and more! In 1912-1913 a new scoped telescope was built at Hammonton School by Professor George Ellery Hale Jr. It featured a 1-inch mirror that allowed astronomers to view objects up to 25 miles away! TheHammonton Museum acquired this instrument in 1951 and has operated it ever since as part of their collection of opticalabilia from around New Jersey! Hammonton is located near the center of Mercer County and is bordered by Asbury Park to the east, Trenton to the north, and Monmouth Junction to the west. The first inhabitants of this area were Native Americans who built wigwams along the Delaware River. European exploration of this area began in 1664 when Englishman Nicholas Scudamore explored this region as part of his survey for a line joining Philadelphia with New York City. In 1701, George Washington's forces burned down a teepee on this site during their Battle of Princeton. On November 12, 1814, during the War of 1812 between Great Britain and America, American General James Wilkinsonflagship attacked British Admiral Sir John Hawkins's ship HMS "Eagle" off Hammonton Point on Long Island while Hawkins was trying to pick up treasure from Spanish ships off Staten Island. The attack resulted in one man dead and five wounded; Hawkins himself escaped unharmed. In 1834, Hammonton was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature; it remained an unincorporated community until its annexation by Mercer County in 1898. The first school in Hammonton opened September 1st, 1835; it became an all-boys school known as Edgefield School District No 2 following incorporation into Mercer County. In 1951-1952 there was also a girls’ high school operated out of home before it merged into West Group High School which currently operates within neighboring Asbury Park Township Schools District No 8 (Asbury Park). TodayHammonton residents are largely engaged in agriculture or other agricultural based businesses such as poultry farming or crop production; however some residents do have service sectors such as manufacturing or transportation management roles within related companies within local communities outside their homes including those located in Trenton and Camden counties NJ adjacent to Hammonton/Mercer county borders
