Hammonton, New Jersey is a city in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,880 at the 2010 census. Hammonton had been a mill town located on the Delaware River since 1795 and became an incorporated municipality in 1868. It is the only township in Mercer County not included within the New York City metropolitan area.

Hammonton is a small town in the New Jersey Highlands region of the United States. It is bordered by Uniontown to the north, Easton to the east, and Bloomfield Township to the south. As of 2010, Hammonton's population was 5,711. The hamlet was founded in 1795 as part of what would become Middlesex County. The original hamlet consisted of just a few houses and was located on a bend in the river near where it currently stands. In 1824, when Middlesex County was created from parts of Hunterdon and Burlington counties, Hammonton became one of its initial municipalities. The first municipal building was built on Main Street in 1827. Hammonton remained an incorporated municipality until 1905 when it merged with Bloomfield Township to form a new township that still exists today as an unincorporated community within Hammonton Township limits. The name "Hammonton" may be derived from either English or French origins and means either "place where there are woods" or "a place where they found fuelwood". There are several theories about why the name stuck and many people believe that it is because it sounded like "hamerstown", which is also the name for Butler County, Pennsylvania since that area was parcelized into Middlesex County in 1795 along with other areas belonging to Mercer County at that time. Despite this theory though, no evidence supports any specific origin for the name beyond its usage throughout history. One significant event which took place in Hammonton during this time period involved World War I veteran Thomas McNamara who fought under American General John J Pershing at Anzio beachhead during Operation Overlord on September 8th 1944. After his discharge from military service he moved to Hammonton and started a small grocery store called 'The Store'. Unfortunately due to World War IIhamlington experienced some serious destruction including damage done by a fire that destroyed much of downtown business district; however despite this setback McNamara managed to reopen his store some time later after receiving help from local businesses such as Peddle’s Hardware & Furniture Co., Bendix’s Electrical Stores Inc., Rouse’s Catering & Gifts Inc., Cmdr Doyle Marine Engineers And Mechanics Merchants Assn., Girdler Auto Sales Co-op (later renamed Girdler Tire), Ritchie Bros Moving & Storage Inc., Diamond Mowers & Lawn Mowers Ltd., Laughlin Chevrolet engine dealership and more! His store continued operations until 1978 when it closed down due primarily to economic reasons although some customers were able to sell their items off through online sales channels after its closure!

Hammonton was founded in 1775 by Captain John Hammonton and his wife Sarah. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Hackensack River, which allowed for easy trade with other parts of New Jersey. By 1800, Hammonton had a population of around 350 people. The Hammonton area experienced some significant events during the Revolutionary War. In 1776, soldiers from the 2nd Regiment of Foot burned down a store in Hammonton after refusing to give up their arms. The event helped spur local resistance against British forces. In 1814, General James Dearborn decided to attack Philadelphia instead of defending it as planned. Because of this decision, many homes and businesses in the hamlet were destroyed or looted by Dearborn's army. In 1825, while still located within New Jersey, Hammonton became part of Pennsylvania when that state was created out of parts of New York and Pennsylvania. As a result, business opportunities dwindled and taxes went up; however, the community kept its name until 1912 when it reverted back to its original form. Today,Hammonton is a small but vibrant community with a rich history that can be enjoyed today thanks to its unique architecture and culture.
Hammonton was founded in 1795 by three Dutchmen, Pieter and Hendrick Hamelton. It was the first town in New Jersey on the peninsula that is now part of Philadelphia. The Hameltons were farmers and their land lay along the Susquehanna River. Hammonton grew rapidly after it became a center for trade with both Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 1824, the town incorporated as a municipality, which led to its rapid growth and development. In 1846, Hammonton became an American statehood township.
