In the early 1800s, Hammonton was an important trading post on the Jersey Shore. It was here that a group of entrepreneurs set about constructing a large water wheel to power their mills. The project became successful and the Wheel Company continued to be operations until 1892. The wheel's construction led to other technological innovations, such as the first electric lighting in New Jersey andHammonton becoming one of the first cities in North America to be served by a municipal water system. The city's industrial growth spanned several centuries, with various businesses specializing in textiles, food processing, lumber, shipbuilding and manufacturing. By World War II, Hammonton had become one of the most significant commercial centers on Long Island Sound. However, during that time it also experienced significant hardship due to two blows: The Korean War (1950-1953) and Hurricane Floyd (August 25-September 3, 1999). In both cases economic conditions deteriorated sufficiently for many businesses to close or leave town; however,Hammonton has bounced back since then and is now considered an important cultural center for the region. Today Hammonton continues its tradition of success in business and culture - its citizens are some of New Jersey's most active civic partners and its downtown is home to a variety of creative enterprises as well as world-renowned museums like Avery Fisher Hall and Pierpont Morgan Library. By 1830, D’Angelo had also acquired land to the east with buildings including a store and millrace (now Hackettstown Road). In 1831 he erected a large wooden stockade across the Raritan River from his property to protect it against raiders by Native Americans led by Chief Sassacaneiwan or “Savage” which continued until after Christopher Columbus landed on America's mainland in 1492. This fortification helped keep peace between aboriginal tribes during that time period as well as later during World War II when American forces invading Britain used it as their headquarters while encamped outside Trenton NJ & parts of Atlantic City NJ
