Hammonton is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The population was 4,828 at the 2010 census. Hammonton is located on the southern edge ofMonmouth County and shares borders with Little Egg Harbor Township to the north, Neptune Township to the east, and both Oceanport Borough to the south and west. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Monmouth County were Dutchman Hendrick Corstiaensen and his partner Jacob Bronckhove in 1664. They named their community "Verwijderde Hoek" (Departed Corner) after they left Amsterdam for new land that same year. In 1703, a group of Swedes led by renegade fur trader Lars Hanson came through Monmouth County looking for new territory in which to settle. They discovered valuable minerals near where Hammonton now stands and decided to establish a settlement there. This became known as Lundy's Hole after Danish fur trader Lars Christensen who had explored it earlier that year. The area around Lundy's Hole was eventually designated as part of Hammonton Township on March 14, 1724. As hamlet grew, many farmers started renting out rooms orchards or tracts of farmland to other villagers for farming purposes or simply trading goods and services with them from their home village or farmsteads into larger towns such as Perth Amboy or Plainfield during the eighteenth century when transportation methods improved vastly with horseback travel over open roadways becoming more common than water crossings at then-pioneering crossings like Raritan Bayou. Hammonton, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. Hammonton began as a farmstead on the banks of the Passaic River in 1795. It became an incorporated borough in 1845 and has since grown to become one of the most populous towns in Mercer County. Hammonton is located just south of Newark Liberty International Airport and east of Elizabeth City. The first settlers to Hammonton were Dutch colonists who arrived from Rotterdam in 1665. They named their land "Hamleton" after one of their family's farms near that city. The first African Americans to live in Hammonton were slaves brought over by General James Grant during the American Revolutionary War for labor on his army's munitions plant at Perth Amboy. The grant's owner, Nicholas refusal to sell his slaves back to their owners prompted Grant to free them himself and purchase them from their masters two years later. The first store opened in 1814 and was run by Samuel Taylor from Englewood Cliffs, NJ. In 1827, John Sweeny founded what would become known as "Sweeny's grocery" on Main Street which today still stands extant with its original facade intact along with much of its contents dating back to that time including early canned goods, flourishes such as peppermint extract (now Jif) and candy bars made from sugar beets - all still available today! When Camden Union Railroad reached Hammonton through what is now Maple Shade Township on December 12th 1863 it resulted in great economic development for the town because jobs could be found working on both railroads simultaneously! On January 1st 1865 Union Station opened up within minutes of being completed following months long construction process! This event provides historical evidence that hamletians were not only supportive but also voracious consumers; something that can still be seen throughout many aspects of daily life today! In 1870 when prohibition began there was great concern among some residents about how this new law would impact their economy given that alcohol had always been a major part of local culture & social life here!
