Hammonton is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,914 at the 2010 census. Hammonton is located on the eastern bank of the Raritan River and is part of the Newark-Middletown, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a long and rich history dating back to its establishment as a hamlet on April 5, 1777 by Presbyterian missionaries under the leadership of Rev. John Armstrong. Hammonton features several heritage buildings including Armstrong's Meeting House which remains active as an annual meeting place for congregants of the Presbyterian Church (USA) since 1866. The word "hamlet" comes from Old English hame meaning "a small village." On April 5, 1777, Reverend John Armstrong organized a group of Presbyterian missionaries to establish a hamlet in present-day Hammonton Township after hearing about land grants available for settlement in that area by Governor Nicholas Johnson. The first settler in what would become Hammonton was William Carteret who arrived on July 8, 1777 with his family from Saylorsville and erected a cabin near today's intersection of Routes 9W and 11W. By December 1st OF THAT YEAR he had landed 3 families and erected 10 cabins within our limits- each one containing 4 rooms & 2 storeys high viz four stories tall! It will be noted that this early hamlet was situated on what later became known as “the Green” or farmstead lot across frompresent day Mount Olivetti Cemetery according to George Whitehead’s map dated 1847 which shows lots along routes 9W and 11W being sold off between Shrewsbury Avenue & Prospect Avenue beginning in 1785/86 when Route 9W crossed over into Swedesboro Township! On October 15th OF THE YEAR1792 Samuel Blanchard arrived at what would become known as “Hammonton Station” having journeyed downriver from Fishkill Landing where he had been residing since November 20th OF THAT YEAR while employed by Mr.(or Mrs?) Moore at Bordentown Ferry Landing opposite today’s intersection of Routes 25N & 27N…..he proceeded up river until he reached Bordentown Ferry Landing where he disembarked his boat & walked ashore leaving behind him 2 children under age 12 named Ebenezer [Ethan] & Ruth Ann [Robertson]. At this point it should be noted that Fishing ground access along present dayRoute 25N still exists just beyond where Sam Blanchard left his landing before turning northwest onto present day Main Street leading eventually to Bordentown Ferry Landing!!! This original landing spot may have been destroyed during developer development but evidence remaining suggests that it was located near nowdaysMount Olivetti Cemetery According to records kept by the Middlesex County Historical Society (MCHS), Samuel Blanchard actually purchased Lots 6&7 east side of road opposite current site of Mount Olivetti Cemetery from Thomas Dongan who resided there prior to 1830!!! It should also be noted that Ebenezer Robertsons father also settled in Amity Township near East Brunswick prior to 1800!!! As early as 1801 Reverend James Irvine established himself at “New Lebanonkirk” some twelve miles westward then two miles southward adjoining Amity township thus making him one half mile outside our boundaries!!!!! In 1807 John Beekman moved thence unto Amity township having removed thence earlier than any other person……..In 1809 Charles Fenton upon arrival herefrom Canada purchased Lots 7and8 west side Road opposite Montresor Place………He constructed anHouse thereabout which still stands…..In 1812 Jno Marx came hitherfrom Philadelphia bringing with him His Wife Catharine their three Children Anthoni [John], Susannah [Ann]And Wilhelm Emanuel all living herewith when they arrive….In 1815 Abraham Funkenstein removed hitherfrom PiscatawayNY arriving here September 16th1815 He built himself anHouse thereabout…………….It should be noted that Abraham Funkenstein actually residered adjacentto present day Montresor Place although no evidence remains extant indicating whether or not this house ever stood!!!! For many years following its founding HAMELTON experienced significant growth due primarily to its location close to both Newark Liberty International Airport (JFK) and Rutgers University – Newark campus providing numerous business opportunities for residents throughout the region. During World War II Hamleton served as Headquarters for Headquarters Troop Eta Company 101st Airborne Division stationed at nearby Fort Dix before returning home late one night after successfully repelling an enemy attack !! In 1951 HAMELTON became host city for the world's first television show - "The Partridge Family". A number of businesses thrived during this time including Grosse Pointe Lumberjacks Inc., Allaire Glass Works Inc., Bendix Cycle Shop Inc., Drury Ford Repair Shop and more! With so much industry happening within such short distance, it is no wonder that manyHameltonians continue to enjoy strong community ties even after many years away from their homes!
