Hammonton, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. Hammonton is one of the oldest towns in Mercer County and the most recent settlement on the site of what is now Hammonton Township date back to 1798. It was named for Colonel John Monmouth who fought with British forces in America during the Revolutionary War. The first settler in what is now Hammonton Township was Abram Hicks from Long Branch, NJ who arrived there on July 15th, 1798. The township was formed on February 14th, 1814 and was initially named after Captain Samuel Hammond who had been killed in action during the Mexican-American War two years earlier. In 1847 it became known as Hammonton following a referendum which approved changing its name to honor General Andrew Johnson who served as President of the United States from 1865-1868 and 1870-1871.
