The suffix "-town" was added to its name on July 11, 1966. The economy of Hammonton is principally based on manufacturing and agriculture. There are small businesses in many sectors including health care services, accounting and bookkeeping services, retail sales recessionarily during the late 2000s but increasing again since 2009 due to strong growth in Camden County outside of town; real estate development; and tourism. The borough has two high schools: Hammonton Senior High School (grades 9-12) and Monroe Middle School (grades 7-8). Both schools offer vocational programs for students in various trades such as carpentry/construction/leather working/ Welding/Fiberglass joinery etc., which have helped keep the community economically active throughout much of its history. There are also several smaller private schools located within or adjacent to the borough: Saint Joseph's Catholic Primary School (grades PreK-5), Holy Cross ParishSchool ( kindergartners through 4th grades), Our Lady Of Lourdes Church (Grade 8+) and Mount Carmel Academy (3rd - 6th grades). These private schools provide education for children from families who cannot afford public school tuition rates anywhere near what their classmates receive in neighboring Camden County townships.

In 1951, Hammonton merged with nearby West Orange Township to form what is now known as Paterson Borough. In 1974, it became an official city within the state of New Jersey.
