Hammonton, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,485. The name means "hollow place" and comes from the Dutch word ham (a valley) and zand (sand). Hammonton is one of two towns in Hunterdon County that were founded by English colonists in 1681. The other town is Paterson. The first ammunition factory in Hammonton was built in 1792 by Nicholas Drexel and started manufacturing cannonball ammunition. In 1815-1816, John Simonds established a second ammunition factory on the same property which continued manufacturing artillery balls until 1830. After the American Civil War ended, both factories became military arsenals and production ceased until 1865 when they reopened as munitions plants again. In 1875-1876 Jonas Salk developed a vaccine against smallpox which led to an increase in produce for local farmers who could now sell their product directly to government officials underpaying brokers who used prices set by other manufacturers. Ammunition plant operators began marketing this new product as "Salk's vaccine". In 1887- 1888 George Washington Stephenson erected a large metal frame railroad switch at what is now known as Route 9 near present day Hammonton Junction. This made it possible for larger quantities of munitions to be transported eastward from Philadelphia than had been possible before because there was no need to go through Atlantic City or Trenton NJ due to congestion on the Arthur Bridge over Delaware River between those towns. The first shot fired from an American cannon occurred on December 12th during Christmas Day hostilities against Great Britain at Monmouth Plains battle site near Perth Amboy NJ with Henry Hudson’s flagship “New Amsterdam” firing projectiles from her stern yard into British Ships anchored off shore south of Cape May Point NJ while Huxley’s HMS Beagle fired broadside shots at targets ashore aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth off Sandy Hook Heights NJ

The community originated as a small hamlet on the border of Mercer and Middlesex Counties and was incorporated as a borough on December 3rd, 1899. On September 11th, 1976, Hammonton merged with neighboring pensions village of Irvington to form the new city of Irvington-Hammonton Borough.
Hammonton, New Jersey is a city located in Mercer County, New Jersey on the southern shore of Long Island. The population was 31,644 as of the 2010 Census. It is the most populous municipality in Mercer County and has a population density of 5,496 people per square mile (2,914/km²). Hammonton is one of the original townships in Mercer County and was first settled by English colonists in 1664. The city was incorporated on April 20, 1868. Hammonton's history dates back to 1664 when English colonists began settling in what is now Mercer County. The town became known as Hammonton after Sir George Hamiltoun who administered British troops through this area during the American Revolution. In 1792-93 Captain John Smith led an exploration party from Newark into Delaware Bay which reached Hammonton Cove before returning home. A wharf was built at present day Point Pleasant beach to facilitate these explorations and also served as a staging ground for goods being transported across Long Island Sound to be sold in Philadelphia or Manhattan. By 1800, there were more than 100 residents living here including traders and farmers who grew crops and raised livestock on what are now several farms within the city limits today. In 1868, with increasing demand for land near points of trade on Long Island Sound,HAMETON INCorporated! This event signaled beginning of Hammonton's growth as a commercial center with mills manufacturing products such as clothiers' goods and millinery items until well into the 20th century when automobiles replaced many other transportation modes

Hammonton is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,978 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. Hammonton was one of three municipalities consolidated into the newly created city of Newark in 2009. The first settlers to the area were Dutch refugees who had fled South Holland during the 16th century. They arrived in what is now Hammonton and built a small community on land that they donated to the town of Newark in 1798. By 1812, however, much of what became Hammonton had been taken by Purchase Township from the Dutch colonists as part of a landgrabbing campaign led by Andrew Duryea and others during the American Revolution. In 1814, after an unsuccessful effort by local Revolutionary War veterans to buy back their former holdings from township trustees, a group of five men – Henry DeCourcey (the son-in-law of President George Washington), John Fitzpatrick (a justice on the New York Supreme Court), Moses Woodrum (a member of The Continental Congress), Elijah French (a Quaker) and Daniel Webster – organized themselves as a "Patriots' Association" and purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) east of present-day Hammonton from Trustees Aaron Burr and Nicholas Fairfield for $5 per acre ($25 per hectare). Their goal was to create an agricultural society with cooperative barns and gardens so that villagers could produce their own food rather than reliance on imported goods. The group's first crop was corn which was successfully grown but not sold because it required expensive inputs such as waterpower to thresh it; lack thereof made it vulnerable to inundation caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 which destroyed most crops in adjacent townships. In response to this disaster, members founded NJ Corn & Feed Cooperative Incorporated on October 15,2012 with initial capital stock valued at $500K+. The cooperative provides sustainable agriculture products for local residents throughout Passaic County through horticulture production including corn ethanol production using sunflower oilseed rape seeds ground up into flour for baking purposes; potato chips; canned goods; natural gas heating systems for cooking purposes; dog food;; human milk;; cheese;; eggs;; fertilizer;;jello; surgical equipment;; lightening rods.; sandals

Hammonton became a small village until the early 19th century when it began to grow larger and develop into a city. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th and 20th centuries and reached its heyday in the 1930s when it had a population of over 30,000 people. However, Hammonton's growth stopped around the turn of the 21st century and today it has a population of around 10,000 people.
