Hammonton was founded on March 20, 1795 by Anthony Hendrickx and his family as a small outpost on the then- unsettled Monmouth Peninsula. The first settler to arrive in what is now Hammonton was Nicholas Goudreau. By 1800, the community had become an important stopover on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. In 1854, Hammonton became part of Bergen County when it was annexed by that county. In 1907, it became a part of New Jersey after being re-established as an independent municipality within Monmouth County. On January 1, 2007, Hammonton underwent a $2 million makeover which included new streets and buildings and saw its population grow from 25,000 to over 30,000 residents over just five months. On November 3rd of that year - just one week after Hurricane Sandy devastating portions of New York City -Hamletons Mayor Gary Suter announced that all businesses in town closed for good due to lack of access to powerlines and other supplies needed for reconstruction efforts following Superstorm Sandy NJ's worst natural disaster ever
