The name is derived from Dutch Haddonveld and Old English Hudenealda or Heonolda. The first known European settlers in what would become Haddonfield were two families of thirteen men and their two wives who arrived on November 6, 1676 by ship from Rotterdam. They named their new settlement after the town of Haven in England where they had been living for several years before coming to America. The first courthouse was built in 1701 and it served as the center of government until 1849 when Hunterdon County split off from Morris County and became its own separate county. In 1854, the first school was built in what would become Haddonfield Township which quickly became one of the most important communities in Sussex County because it had a post office, store, ferry service (which connected Newark Bay with Atlantic City), churches (including one founded by John Davenport), schools (including one established by Samuel Morse), mills (including one that produced flour for Philadelphia's breadbasket) and a railroad station serving both local farmers and commuters to Penn Station. In 1859, an anthracite coal mine opened near present-day Haddonfield and soon led to an increase in population as more people started working in the mines while also spreading word of good farmland located around the area for sale. As such, development didn't stop until World War II when much of rural Sussex County including Haddonfield came under Japanese occupation during World War II because Allied forces foundering on SVG2 could not take alternative positions due to strategic land holdings held by Japan including extensive forests surrounding ports providing natural resources critical to war effort like oil refineries used to make munitions; port facilities vital for military supply lines connecting Asia with Europe; airfields used during Battle of Okinawa; Manhatten Power House which supplied electricity to New York City; etc.; all were captured or destroyed along with vast amounts of other valuable equipment/assets making life difficult for those caught up within Japan's grip including further restrictions placed on movements within Japan itself not only during wartime but also afterwards culminating with General Headquarters' Order No 3 "Death Jesters" which authorized summary executions among enemy personnel deemed either insufficiently repentant or too troublesome following surrender).
