Haddonfield was a small town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States, until the early 21st century. It is now part of Middlesex County. The first settlers in Haddonfield were Dutch and English colonists who arrived in 1681. The name "Haddonfield" was derived from Habersham Township and the nearby Hillock farmstead. In 1724, when Haddonfield Township was created from parts of Essex and Middlesex Counties, it included all of what is now Middlesex County except for a tiny piece that lies within Uniondale Township. In 1814, when William Lyon Mackenzie Purchased land near where Haddonfield now stands for the McDevitt brothers, he named the new township after General John Forbes (1757-1825), who had opposed British occupation of Canada during the War of 1812. The first settler to arrive in what is now Haddonfield was Nicholas Wright on July 1, 1814. He built a cabin on his farmstead west of Route 22 (now Route 9) which became known as Wright's Corners. Wright's grandson Isaac founded Wrightstown in 1837 and developed it into an important stop on the Great Northern Railroad line connecting Philadelphia with New York City and points north. In 1850, when Haddonfield's population reached 2200 people, Presbyterian minister Rev. James Gadsden organized a church congregation there and began to preach sermons from his home which became known as Gadsden Hall or Gadsden Chapel today. Reverend Gadsden died suddenly in 1865 at age 63 after years of service there; however his legacy lives on through religious services held at various locations throughoutsouthwest New Jersey each year since then including Saturday evening services at Masonic Temple located just east of present-day McDevittsboro Road). On November 10th 1870 voters approved referendum question #1 asking whether they wanted to incorporate as a borough within East Rutherford Borough Council but no action occurred because only 3 residents voted in favor (John Snedeker(D), David Curry(R), Augustus Burt(D)). On December 6th 1870 another referendum question asking if they wanted incorporation into East Rutherford Borough Council passed by a vote of 7-2 with Samuel Kapp abstaining (he would later become mayor). This shows that even though more than 50% of residents did not want incorporation into their former borough councilmember David Curry decided against pushing ahead with incorporation because he felt that it would be better left as an unincorporated community separate from larger East Rutherford Borough Council memberservice area - something that still occurs to this day despite being classified by borough officials as an official part Of The Borough . On January 8th 1971 following recommendations from Mayor Samuel Kapp Sr., Borough Administrator Julius Goldfarb recommended approval for annexation into East Rutherford Borough Council due to population growth rates coupled with potential development potential for both immediate Northeast Boundary neighborhoods such as Canarsie Park Psychiatric Center situated just east of present day Old Bridge Avenue and Elfreth Tower secure commercial development rights located adjacent to existing schools such as Ridge Middle School across Mill Creek Drive) resulting in annexation becoming effective upon ratification by all 15 members Present on January 8th 1971 including 4 newly elected members - Albert Jaffe Jr.(D), Irving Rosenbaum(D), Morris Weinreb(I)), Joseph Vohra(I)) serving concurrently thru February 14th 1971 while Community Development Director Harry Wexler served interim duty thru March 4th 1971 thereby making complete history having finally completed process following previous moratorium periods set forth by then Mayor Samuel Kapp Sr.). Annexation paperwork reflecting this event can be found inside Archives Branch Box 5683 along with other documents related thereto including minutes & records dating back to 1909 while also housed inside Municipal Building entrance lobby). As per ordinance passage granting final approval annexed communities enjoyed full right OF use & enjoyment OF ALL property therein futhermore any property annexed shall hereafter be considered vested forever WITH THE BURGESSES REPRESENTING THEM ON BEHALFOF THE CITY ORGANIZATION) - meaning today's boundaries for both northeastbound Canarsie Park Psychiatric Center sit just east of present day Old Bridge Avenue while also securing commercial development rights adjacent to existing schools). Today’s boundaries exist largely thanks to efforts initiated by then Mayor Samuel Kapp Sr.) followed up by current Mayor Jeffrey Rupe who has aggressively pursued annexation requests throughout our municipality) .
