Haddonfield is a borough in New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 26,569. It is part of the Camden-based Camden County and is bordered by North Camden to the east, South Camden to the south, West Camden to the west, and Edison Township to the north. The borough was formed on April 1, 1838 from parts of Easton Township. The first settlers were Germans who had come overland from Germany in droves during 1836-37. They founded a small cluster of log homes near what is now Route 21 in Haddonfield Township. By 1840 there were about 20 houses in all with some people living off farm as well as trading goods with other villages along Route 222 which at that time was known as "the Great Road." In 1844 an actwas passed by Congress designating portions of Mercer County as included within West Jersey for colonization purposes; this act provided for land grants to be given out according to numbers desired and named Haddonfield after George Washington Haddad who had been brought over on a package ship from Philadelphia that year. In 1845 more German settlers arrived - this time under American auspices - when two families came overland from Philadelphia under contract with Nicholas Biddle (a British subject) for 160 acres (about 6 blocks). The town site they selected was between present-day Mount Holly Avenue and Wingate Street on what are now Cedar Lane and Parsippany Heights streets east of Market Street. On November 4, 1850 voters approved a resolution recommending incorporation into Middlesex County because it seemed likely that township boundaries would eventually change due to growth or annexation by neighboring townships such as White Plains or Paterson. The vote resulted in only 2 ballots being cast against incorporation – one at each end of Borough Hall – so on December 7th Borough Mayor John Cavanaugh submitted an application for charter amendment which became effective on January 1st, 1851 adding $1/foot ($50/$1600) annual property tax rate plus 3% assessed value increase each year until it reached 10%. At first rates were set at $20/acre/$4000 ($8000/year), but later increased annually until reaching $40/acre/$10 million effective July 1st 1906 when rates doubled again due largely to World War I bumper crops resulting in numerous farms expropriated by Treasury Department during wartime rationing measures. This period also saw rapid development including new housing developments such as Nuttall Park which spanned much of present day Mount Holly Avenue between Parsippany Heights and Cedar Lane; today's Nuttall Boulevard followed its original course soon after opening up beyond Parsippany Heights before turning north towards Metropolitan State University campus across Ridge Road today just past Interstate 95 exit 9A ( remnants of Nuttall Boulevard still visible). In addition businesses began appearing along Main Streets like Clinton & Woodrow Avenues becoming known collectively as "The Strip". This area later became home to several large department stores including Beazer Carpet & Home store (now Macy's), JCPenney & Sears Roebuck Co., Woolworths & Fords etc.. Improved transportation options led also to suburban expansion with adjacent Elmira becoming an important commercial center while Bridgeport annexed nearby Elizabeth City following its own referendum vote in 1906 allowing for limited self government within Burlington County rather than remaining within Middlesex County which at that time included both Newark Liberty International Airport (~15 miles away) and Princeton University (~25 miles away). With rapidly changing demographics various schools were built throughout ensuing decades including Present Day Academy High School 8 Mile Road opposite Maplewood Mall where students currently attend school via bus; while Congregational Church located across Prospect Ave from Downtown Haddonfield closed down circa 1965 giving way rise today's 'Olde Towne' shopping district containing many former grocery stores along Prospect Avenue itself dating back prior thereto including: Dutch Bros., Joes Grocery Store (& thereafter Dutch Bros.' successor Ayers Rock Supermarkets), Peoples Drugstore (& thereafter Peoples Pharmacy), Dunlop Tire Company (& thereafter Dunlop Rubber Company), Hershey Chocolate company et al.. Residents have voted twice since then (2007 & 2012) regarding whether or not their community should annex into Jersey City Due mostly increasing subway traffic levels making commuting increasingly difficult even without any plans underway whatsoever... formally petitioning for annexation has not been received despite petitions bearing very high postage prices... [it has] been decided instead that continued civic engagement+prominent display thereof will be our strategy going forward

Haddonfield is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south border of Newark and across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. The first settlement in what is now Haddonfield was called "Cheshire" because of its rich soil and quick growth. In 1681, an Englishman by the name of Haddon erected a small cabin on land that would later be part of North Brunswick Township. On July 5, 1701, Captain John Smith discovered this area when he sailed downriver from Philadelphia aboard the HMS Discovery. He named it after his hometown of Huddersfield in England which he had visited there before his discovery voyage. colonial settlers arrived and began to grow crops and build homes around 1710-1712. By 1722, most of what is now Haddonfield had been founded with some 300 people living hereabouts including six families who started agriculture on a piece of land known as "Haddon's Neck". In 1821-1824, Haddonfield Township was formed from parts of North Brunswick Township and became one of the five municipalities within Camden County (along with Camden City proper, Cherry Hill Village/ Hackensack, South Whitehall Borough (now West Deptford), and Easton). On February 14th 1874 during a meeting held at First Presbyterian Church in nearby Red Bank to discuss local improvements for township residents reported by trustee Edward Atherton that: '(a committee) has laid out streets through our town.' This marked an important milestone as it signaled that township residents were beginning to take control over their own destiny - something they continued to do until 1955 when county status changed back to Municipal Corporation form within Camden County - making township government powers completely limited to those under its jurisdiction without any reverted rights or exceptions! Although primarily agricultural until well into the 20th century due largely to lack of access to markets outside the immediate vicinity; industry also began arriving in significant numbers during this time thanks in large part to transportation developments such as motorways which brought jobs directly into township boundaries; manufacturing products being produced both domestically and abroad becoming increasingly common not just locally but also statewide (e.g., electric vehicles); making today's community much more diverse than when it first emerged!
