Hackensack is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 34,746 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Hackensack River and is bordered by Emerson to the north, East Brunswick to the east, Paramus to the south, and Westwood to the west. The earliest known human presence in Hackensack was during Paleo-Indian times when they lived near what is now Hackensack Avenue and Broadway. In 1727 Englishman John Hudsons sailed upriver from Port Royal on Jamaica and passed through HackensACK on his way down river to Manhattan. Hudson's landing led to new exploration of North America and introduced European settlers into what is now Bergen County. In 1847 American General George Washington visited Hackensack for a military inspection tour before his inauguration as President of the United States; he stayed at Dunellen Hall until May 9th where he arbitrated a dispute between two farmers aboutadow land that had been confiscated from them by British forces during their occupation of New Jersey during the War of 1812 (the Battle of Monmouth). After his visit Governor David Riegle called for a town site survey which resulted in selection of what would becomeHackENSACK on November 12th, 1847. In 1870–71 Dutchmen Gijsbert van Kaapstine and Hendrik Heineman surveyed much of present day HackENSACK including parts of Emerson Township including today's Elmira Road/HackENSACK Boulevard area while working for Jardin & Van Buren Real Estate Company under manager Abraham Levy; they named their entire township after him – Hachkensacker (later changed to "HackENSACK"). On October 5th 1870 van Kaapstine sent out an exploratory party consisting of five men led by novice leader Johan de Witt who discovered freshwater marshes along both banks of the river but did not find any evidence that there were any ancient Native American settlements or cultures withinpresent day HackENSACK boundaries; however he did include some very low hills located near present day Elmira Road/HackENTSACK Boulevard in Emerson Township which are still part Of Hachkensacker today . . . these hills have been aptly nicknamed “The De Witt Hills” due to their discovery by Johan de Witt more than 150 years ago! After de Witt's explorations no further development was made until 1907 when engineer George Waring constructed an artificial channel across the river using dredging techniques so that shipping could be carried directly from Newark Bay into Long Island Sound via Southold Landing without having to go around Passaic River estuary. This created significant economic benefits for early Hooksett Township residents as it improved access to markets throughout southern New Jersey and increased trade with other parts of North America.; however initial construction efforts were met with strong opposition from local fishermen who saw this project as another means for commercial fishing boatsTo make matters worse WBNG radio station began broadcasting live from Hooksett prior to completion papering over its transmitter atop Mount Desert Island making it difficult if not impossibleto listen live without interference。 On May 14th 1912 Mayor John Fenton announced plans for construction of a new City Hall Complex which would replace Dunellen Hall which had been destroyed in a fire three years earlier; work started on September 10th 1912 and was completed on November 20th 1912 following $5 million in donations from citizens.; At its completion City Hall became one OF THE LARGEST CITY HALLS IN AMERICA! hackentsackslargestcityhall
