Hackensack is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 18,811. The name "Hackensack" is derived from the Dutch word hacke (“to hit or pierce”) and nackt (“naked”). Hackensack was incorporated as a borough on March 12, 1868, from portions of Ridgewood Township. On April 5, 1870, it became an independent city with its own government. On November 3rd of that year, Hackensack merged with neighboring Paramus to form the new city of Paramus-Hackensack. The merger resulted in a decrease in population because Paramus had more residents who worked in nearby cities such as Monmouth Junction and Paterson. The first settler in what is now Hackensack was Nicholas Jansen who arrived on June 6th 1709 A.D., according to records kept by the Dutch East India Company at Fort Orange. He built his house on what is now North Bridge Street and named it Jansen's Block after himself and his family members including Nicholas' wife Johanna van der Linden(née de Valk), Pieter de la Rue(pieter de la Ronde) and Margrietje Oudolfs(marijntje oudolfs). The first permanent English settler arrived in 1664 when John Smith purchased land near present day Edison Place from Sir George Carteret for $2 per acre.(1) In 1709 Nicholas Jansen established an Improved Congregational Society here which later became known as The Hackensacks Incorporated Society Of New Jersey In 1862 Colonel Nathaniel Greene purchased 1/4 mile east of present day Broad Street for $2 per acre.(2) This area would become known as Green's Glen which was developed into today's Hackensacks section of Newark.(3) Colored people were not allowed to live within white bounds at this time so they moved into this newly acquired land where they erected their homes between broad avenues leading northeastward like today's Routes 9 & 201A On May 2nd 1775 French troops under General Charles Cornwallis landed at White Sands Beach and began invading New Jersey during the Revolutionary War Occupation After several days of skirmish fought near Princeton University by British forces under Cornwallis local militia led by Captain John Davis retreated back to Green Corners Tavern where they replaced General Cornwallis' army corps commanders Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Mifflin( colonel ), Major James Piscataway(major )and Israel Putnam each with one hundred men each . Aftermath General Cornwallis orders all breastworks along beach blown up then withdrew his entire force thereby sparing Newark from wholesale destruction In 1814hackENSACK tOWN was founded when Isaac Brockman donated lot #5 on North Bridge Road which included current site of Southside Mall

Hackensack, New Jersey is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-most populous municipality in New Jersey and the sixth-largest city in the state of New Jersey. The name "Hackensack" comes from a Native American word meaning "haunted place." The first European settlers in what is now Hackensack were Dutch colonists who landed on Long Island (now Nassau County) on May 10, 1614. They established a trading post called Cabrini-Green on what is now Vinegar Hill. On November 3, 1647, English colonists arrived and founded Perth Amboy to the north of Hackensack. In 1764, when George Washington's army defeated Sir John Johnson's British forces at Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War, Hackensack became part of Pennsylvania as part of that state's western boundary. The first municipal government was formed in 1835 when portions of Perth Amboy were annexed to Hackensack by Mayor Aiken Ladd. The present City Hall was built in 1909 and enlarged in 1954 with additions including an auditorium and two towers topped with cupolas. In 1951–1952 and 1959–1960 respectively, local efforts led to passage of two acts creating Municipal Corporations within Bergen County which eventually resulted in creation ofHackensack Township on December 1st 1960 by an act of the Governor Robert Bamberger Lodge Jr., making it one of four townships within Bergen County - all created through legislation rather than nomination by township residents only as required under Borough formularies adopted at various points throughout municipalities growth since Confederation; also contributing to increase population density over Borough formularies had done prior thereto; Trenton having been incorporated as a borough upon its merger into Middlesex County following enactment (in 1965) thereof dealing also with Community Development Authority issues arising out thereof). hackenacksociety@gmail.com
