Hackensack is a borough in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 31,811 at the 2010 census. Hackensack is one of the five boroughs that make up the City of Newark and it is part of the Newark-Trenton metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Hackensack were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624 as part of New Netherland. In 1675, Colonel George Washington's forces fought an English army at Trenton during the Third Anglo-Dutch War and made gains against British forces before finally withdrawing across the river to Manhattan. Commodore John Stevens's Navy base on Long Island (then part of Staten Island) served as a model for Hackensack's early development as a naval port; Stevens called his settlement "New York" after London's Tower Bridge. By 1801, however,hackensack had outgrown its role as a naval port and became known primarily for its agricultural produce and milling industries due to changing economic conditions in New Jersey. In 1814, Benjamin Cardozo purchased land south of Hackensacks original town line from Nicholas de Vere III for £6 per acre (approximately $140 per square mile). Cardozo named his new township after himself –Hackensack Township – while also naming some nearby villages such as Bordentown after him or his descendants. On July 8, 1827, under Regulation 17a of the New Jersey Legislature (), Hackensacks boundaries were redefined to include portions of Sayre Heights (now South Orange), Caldwell Heights (now North Caldwell), Livingston Heights (now West Livingston), Harrisonburg Township (now Parsippany), Monroe Township (now Freehold Borough), and Morristown Borough which had been annexed by Newark from Passaic County on April 1, 1880 (). The townships within present-day Hackensack were consolidated into one municipality on May 14th 1978 with the designation "Hackensack". Today’s municipalities form one combined government which includes all five boroughs located within its borders: Camden County to the north; Bergen County to the east; Essex County to the southeast; Hudson County to our southern border; and Union City Municipal Corporation

Hackensack was founded in 1788 by Nicholas Hackensack and his wife, Mercy. The town became a center of production for textiles, flour and other goods. In the 1840s, Hackensack became known as the "Queen City of the Northeast." In 1868, it was renamed to honor William Randolph Hearst.
