The current form of the town's name was derived from a location on Hackensack River (now part of Hackensack Township). The first people who lived in what is now Hackensack were farmers and their families who arrived from Pennsylvania in the early 17th century. In 1664, some settlers from Yorkshire built a small fort on the eastern bank of the Hackensack River. This settlement became known as "Hackensacks". Some years later, other English settlers moved into this area and began to settle again. They named their new community "Hackensack", after one of their own number – John Hackenstall – who had married an Indian woman and settled in this region before coming to America. In 1837, when New Jersey became a state, Hackensacked Township was formed from portions of Middlesex County east of Newark and west of Paterson. The township grew rapidly because it included land that had been restocked with refugees from Great Britain during the 1830s following its Napoleonic Wars occupation by France. By 1840, there were over 1,500 residents living inhackENSACK township! During World War II many residents worked at various factories located around Paramus or Sayreville; however most citizens avoided combat service because they believed it would damage their health too much for too long! On July 15th 1944 two planes crashed into residential buildings near Paramus killing thirty-eight people and injuring ninety-six others; immediately afterwards all male citizens between 18 and 44 years old were drafted into military service without any chance for ‘selective’ training or selection; women did not serve until after repeal of prohibition (1946). Many residents chose to stay home during wartime rather than go work at factories which resulted in increased crime rates as unsupervised males congregated around munitions plants etc.; nevertheless little changed except property values went up considerably!!!

Hackensack was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 as a small fishing village on the north bank of the Hackensack River. In 1814 it became part of Bergen County and was incorporated as a town in 1834. The name "Hackensack" is derived from Hebrew חדשה (Hakhamsha), meaning "pleasant place." The first settlers to arrive in what is now Hackensack were farmers who arrived from Holland around 1664. They built small houses on land that they had acquired from Native Americans along the riverbank. By 1701 most of these people had left for other parts of New Netherland because of high taxes and poor soil near Manhattan. In 1814, when part of Bergen County was annexed by portions of Middlesex County,Hackensack became one of its many towns. At that time it contained about 100 people and consisted mainly of fishermen who fished on the riverbanks around town. One early resident, John Snyder, donated land east of Hackensack River for University Avenue which served as a bypass route connecting Perth Amboy to Princeton Junction via Hackensacks Ferry Landing on both sides of the river. After services began upriver at Perth Amboy Ferry Landing on April 12th 1865 following completion of Long Island Railroad's main line across Newtown Creek into Borough Heights - also becoming known as "the new town", hackensenackers quickly adapted to their new surroundings and soon numbered among NJ's oldest families with over 200 residents registered with Hoboken Clerk vie record books beginning July 1st 1865 On December 13th 1870 Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail opened an insurance office at No 2 Main Street opposite Union Station located where today's Federal Reserve Bank building stands
