In 1814, when Hoboken became an incorporated village within Middlesex County, Hackensack formed part of that village until it annexed by Middlesex in 1846; however, because Hackensack lay squarely within Bergen Township - then under Union County - it remained an unincorporated township until 1974 when it became a full-time municipality with its own government. In 1951–1952 the Hackensacks built their first high school. That same year they also opened their first commercial store – Jiffy Lube across from City Hall – which remains open today as part of Eastern Market/Hackensack Industrial Park retail complex. In 1957 they opened their second high school – East High School – which still stands today; this time located on North 7th Street off Center Avenue inside Eastern Market/Hackensacking Industrial Park retail complex.
